Today, we received the bad news that yet another Covid-19 cluster formed in the community.
Given that we’ve barely begun the Chinese New Year, it was rather disheartening.
But just hours after the news was released, something horrific happened.
5 People Died After Car Slammed into Tanjong Pagar Shophouse on Day 2 of CNY
Tragedy struck on the second day of Chinese New Year after five people died in a car accident at Tanjong Pagar Road.
According to The Straits Times, a car, believed to be a BMW, slammed into the front of a shophouse on Saturday (13 Feb) morning.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 37 Tanjong Pagar Rd at about 5.40am.
Five people were pronounced dead at the scene and one was sent to SGH with burn injuries.
The five who died were believed to be in the car when the accident occurred.
The crash also caused a fire to break out in the shophouse.
“The fire involved a car and the front of a shophouse. SCDF extinguished the fire with three water jets and one compressed air foam backpack,” SCDF said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Due to Road Closures, Some Buses Had to Skip 10 Stops
At around 7.30am, the Land Transport Authority announced a road closure on Tanjong Pagar Road (towards Murray Street) after Maxwell Road.
Consequently, SBS Transit announced that “due to an accident” bus services 80 and 145 were being diverted from Tanjong Pagar Road (towards Hoe Chiang Road), with 10 bus stops skipped.
