When you’re a food delivery rider, it’s only natural that you’ll end up meeting all sorts of different people while at work.
Some may even go the extra mile to show kindness to riders, while others are rude and far from appreciative.
As of recent years, especially during the pandemic, there have been many stories told about unpleasant delivery experiences, be it the fault of the customer or the rider.
Well, this particular food delivery rider just happened to encounter a rather unreasonable customer with a strange request.
Customer Asked Delivery Rider To Buy Cigarettes
Chua Wei Ming, a food delivery rider, took to the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on 11 July to air his grievances about a particular customer he came across.
“To all customers that order food delivery, please don’t ask us to buy cigarette,” he started his post off in writing.
According to the screenshot he attached, a customer that he was supposed to deliver food to contacted him to ask for help.
She ended up asking if he could buy some cigarettes for her, and even specified that she wanted the Marlboro Mega Ice Blast cigarettes in particular.
However, Chua did not accept her request, and apologised to her saying he couldn’t do as it was against their Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Yet, the customer still insisted on it, saying that it’s just “a help”.
Some customers really think food delivery riders are their personal errand runners, huh.
Unhappy Customer Reacted Rudely
Upon reaching the customer’s place, Chua was taken aback by the customer’s behaviour.
He said that she snatched the food from his hands when he passed it to her and slammed the door in his face, seeming like she was upset as he rejected her request.
“We delivery riders don’t deserve to be treated like this. Want cigarette, go and get it yourself,” he added.
Chua also noted that delivery riders don’t know their customers’ ages, and many that they encounter are teenagers.
If they really did buy cigarettes for a customer who happened to be under the legal age, it could get them in trouble if they got cigarettes for a minor.
Netizens Praise And Empathise With Him
Many comments under Chua’s post thanked and commended him for doing the right thing and refusing to buy cigarettes for the customer.
Some also echoed the fact that riders aren’t meant to be taken for granted and aren’t obliged to help customers with extra requests.
Another food delivery rider also shared under his post that she encountered a young teenage couple last week who requested for the same thing.
They even gave her directions as to where to find it and said they’ll buy it themselves when the rider rejected them.
