Foodpanda Vs Deliveroo: which is the better in S’pore?

Food delivery in Singapore never really took off, at least not like it did in many other countries. This could be due to the fact that we are a small country and honestly, there’s most likely a food place just a 5 minutes walk from our homes.

Of course, if you live in a landed property (or what we hokkien call, eat-wind-house (jia hong chu)), you’ll likely walk a long time to get to a food place.

We can easily get food anywhere without a hassle and ordering food can sometimes be a pain—just imagine, I could have gotten myself a chicken chop from the coffeeshop nearby in 10 minutes instead of waiting for 40 minutes for the food to arrive.

However, two delivery services have made their way into Singapore, and both are fiercely battling it out for the top spot in the food delivery industry—Deliveroo and Foodpanda. If you have used both services before, which service do you prefer?

Variety of food options when ordering from CBD areas
Foodpanda: Hundreds of varieties, but mostly fast food and food joints such as Burger King, Soup Spoon, 4Fingers and Swensen’s.

Deliveroo: A huge variety—1,300 restaurants to choose from

Minimum order / delivery cost
Foodpanda: Varied minimum order for different food joints. It ranges from about $12 from Burger King to $60 at Islamic Restaurant. Delivery cost ranges from $3 to $10 depending on the different restaurant choices.

Deliveroo: No minimum order (which is really great)! The delivery cost structure is also simple: for receipts under $25, the delivery fee is $5 while anything above $25 is priced at $3.

Delivery areas
Foodpanda: Various delivery areas but does not extend to all areas. They are slow to update new residential areas but make up for it by updating it after receiving feedback from the public.

Deliveroo: Currently delivers to 26 zones in Singapore.

Customer Service:
Foodpanda: Customer service is lacking as there is no email to acknowledge your orders. They would only send a text message after they have confirmed your order with the respective restaurants, hence, it means you have to wait longer if you are ordering a huge meal from different establishments.

Deliveroo: Good customer service as they will send an email to acknowledge your orders. Time taken to confirm orders from different establishments is also slow.

Delivery Time
Foodpanda: It takes about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to get your food.

Deliveroo: It takes about 32mins to get your food.

Looking at the comparison above, it would seem that both Foodpanda and Deliveroo are doing a good job in their respective circles of influence.

Both delivery companies have their good and bad, so we think this is a tie—nobody is better than the other since their market segmentation is a little bit different from each other.

A bonus of sorts
If you have not heard, Uber is looking to join in the food delivery industry. Are you excited to see how they’ll do in the food delivery sector considering their track record so far? We are! Uber is currently conducting a test of sorts, but if they do join the sector for real, it’s going to be exciting.
