If you’re a driver, you’ll know about this: some motorcyclists tend to go between two lanes and one can only wonder when they’ll suddenly merge into yours.
Drivers would have to decide whether to just go faster and overtake, or lag behind the bike. Go faster and the bike might just swerve in (coz he’s technically in your lane as he’s taking two lanes); go slow and impatient kanchiong spiders behind you might just honk you.
However, lane splitting is technically legal (or at least, there’s no law about it) in Singapore, thought it’s not encouraged. Without lane splitting, our roads would be more congested as motorcyclists join in a jam.
Here’s an example of a lane split gone wrong…and, thankfully, did not have any casualty.
With over 7K Shares, there are two schools of thoughts here: one thinking that the Mercedes driver shouldn’t be so careless (therefore #TeamBiker) and one believing that the lane splitting by the biker caused the accident (therefore #TeamMercs).
We can’t deny that the Mercedes driver is careless, and could have been daydreaming. If not for the motorcyclist’s quick reflex to avoid the trailer, it might have been a major disaster.
But of course, some argue that he’s going to make the turn: why leave such a big space? Is he lane splitting or what?
