Foreign Workers Helped Remove Large Pieces of Wood on the PIE; Neitzens More Concerned About ‘Dumping’ Instead

There seems to be a feeling of animosity towards Indian nationals working and living in Singapore at the moment.

Just the other day, the police said they are investigating an incident involving a man who allegedly uttered racist remarks against an Indian family at Pasir Ris Beach.

The man allegedly said, “bloody Indians go back, spreading virus here”.

Now, some Singaporeans are once again exposing their xenophobic side.

Why?

Because some foreign workers helped removed large pieces of wood from the expressway.

Foreign Workers Helped Remove Large Pieces of Wood on the PIE; Neitzens Display Xenophobia & Accused them of Dumping

On 13 May, Facebook page ROADS.sg shared a video of two foreign workers helping to remove wooden pallets that were found on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE).

In the video, two men can be seen moving two large wooden pallets from the PIE, on the side headed towards Tuas.

After removing the two pieces of wood, they placed them behind the bushes of the road shoulder, presumably to prevent any vehicles from colliding into them.

Xenophobic Comments

Given that they were doing a kind deed, you’d expect netizens to be grateful, right?

Nope.

Well, some were certainly thankful, but others resorted to making xenophobic comments because they believed the two workers had “dumped” the boards illegally.

“This is what they did back in their own country so the habit stayed with them,” said one commenter.

“This is the mentality for them that’s why India have (sic) lots of trash and rubbish everywhere,” said another.

Many of them accused the two workers of illegally dumping the boards over the bush, believing it had been thrown into a drain.

However, the poster of the video later shared a picture of where the pallets had actually landed, and it wasn’t in a longkang.

Driver Had No Space in His Lorry for the Pallets

The netizens who criticised the workers said they should have taken the wooden pallets along with them so they could dispose of them somewhere else.

However, as the driver explained in the comments section of ROADS.sg’s post, this was not possible:

“I was thinking to bring back the pallets with me, unfortunately, there was no space to put them inside my lorry so decided to place them on the covered drain. Hope it won’t block the drainage water.”

But as we all know, jumping to conclusions is a national sport.

Fortunately, there were a few who thanked the workers for their kind deed. Some found the commenters’ rude comments perplexing, with a couple arguing that not many Singaporeans would do the same thing.

Maybe it’s time to treat people with more kindness.
