A Study Shows That Being Forgetful Might Mean That You Are ‘Super Intelligent’

You slowly succumb to the fact that your brain is literally turning into mush.

I mean, have you ever found yourself googling the simplest words, scrambling your brain (and fingers) when doing simple math?

Or you get distracted and you forgot what you actually wanted to do.

Believe it or not, this is actually a good thing.

Forgetting stuff actually makes you smarter

A study by Neuron Journal actually claims that forgetting is part of a natural brain process that will help you get smarter at the end of the day.

I mean, come on, we HAVE to be smart, if not how would we have survived the gruelling education system in Singapore.

Though I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to even pass the “O” levels if I have to sit for it now.

Remembering minute details might not seem important in the long run, so the brain clears out the unnecessary information and stores the important ones.

Just like how your laptop needs to clear its hard disk space for new data.

A report by researchers, Paul Frankland and Blake Richards of the University of Toronto mentioned that the goal of memory is to optimize intelligent decision-making.

What is intelligent decision-making?

Ok, let me give you a simple example.

What is 13×15?

Did you use the calculator or you knew it right off the bat? (btw the answer is 195)

So, it doesn’t really matter, if you know the answer to 13×15. What matters is how you get the answer. So in this case, Googling it or using the calculator would seem the best option.

Do you get my drift?

Your brain memorizes the process of getting the answer, as opposed to remembering the answer.

The hippocampus in your brain is smart

If you happen to find a more efficient way to solve a problem, it will store it and wipe out the old method.

Pretty rad, if you ask me. It’s like an automatic iOS update!

This makes us highly adaptable, making us fast learners and the ability to reach our goals in the most efficient (and laziest) way.

The brain knows what matters and what doesn’t, so the next time you forget something, don’t beat yourself up!

Instead pat your own shoulder, because you, my friend are getting smarter!

Of course, if you find yourself forgetting too much, it might be good to get a checkup. Just in case, you know.
