Dear Durian Lovers,
To my fellow durian lovers who’ve dreamed of drowning in bittersweet durian flesh, I’ve got amazing news for you.
But before we get to the amazing news (which I’m pretty sure you’re dying to find out), I need to ask you to download our amazing Goody Feed app.
That’s the only way I can convince my boss to make this article available on Facebook because it’s durian. Nobody messes with durians. Nobody.
So anyway, the app.
It’s free and the ROI you’ll get in terms of interesting information, amazing deals and FML giveaways (literally because it costs us quite a bit to get those up and going) is going to be a-ma-zing.
With a capital A.
Okay, now that I’m done with the shameless plug my boss made me do, let’s get into the meaty details.
S’pore Hit With Durian Oversupply
If you’ve been paying attention to Malaysia’s weather, it’s been pretty hot.
And that’s a good thing because durians ripen quicker in hot weather, which led to an oversupply of durians in Singapore.
Basic demand vs supply theory in economics says that, if supply is more than demand, prices are going to fall.
The higher the supply is, the higher it’ll fall.
Previously, we wrote this article that says the prices of durian are going to fall as much as 50% in July 2018.
A typical mao shan wang durian like this is selling at $12-15 per kg. It usually costs about $28 to $35 in Singapore.
And a D24 durian like the one below is selling at $5, instead of the usual $15.
Some durians were selling at such a low price, it’s even cheaper than McDonald’s D24 Durian McFlurry.
We even told durian lovers in Singapore to chiong for durians that first weekend because durian sellers haven’t adjusted to the number of durians they have.
Which means, they’re going to be selling it very cheaply.
Of course, we thought that the sellers will also be able to adapt quickly and either order lesser or sell it at a less competitive price point.
We were wrong. And oh boy, we’re happy that we’re wrong.
It seems that the durian situation seemed to have gotten even more serious.
And by that, we mean the number of durians coming into Singapore from Malaysia. If they were Malaysian soldiers, we’d probably call it a large scale invasion.
And for the first time ever, we’re happy to be wrong.
Why?
Because free durian, baby!
Durian Stalls in S’pore Giving Away Free Durians
On 18 July, The New Paper reported that at least two durian stalls in Singapore have been giving away durians since Monday.
One of them is Ah Lan Fresh Fruits Stall at Balestier Road, who is giving out 300kg worth of durians every day until 19 Jul 2018.
Which is today, by the way, so now you know where you need to be to enjoy free durian, right?
And don’t think they’re the cheap variety.
The free durians are of the D24, Jing Fung and Red Prawn varieties. Not the best, but definitely one of the better ones out there.
Stall owner Madam Lee Chiew Lan says it’s their way of thanking the customers for their support.
But don’t worry if it’s your first time there, just queue up and walk away with a durian or two for the night.
Another stall that gave out free durian is Sam Fruit Trading in Tampines.
The stall owner, Chan Chee Ning said that he gave away 1,300kg worth of durians over two hours to more than 500 people.
The giveaway was originally meant for the elderly aged 60 and above but young people turned up and took the durians too.
They tried to stop the youngsters but failed to do so.
And they’re going to give out free durians again on Monday, 23 Jul 2018.
Are you, or do you know someone who’s over 60? You know where to go liao, right?
By the way, remember we said at least at the beginning? There might be more durian stalls out there giving out free durians nobody knows about. If you happen to know any, let us know, please?
After all, sharing is caring mah.
On a separate note, if you’re a durian seller who’s giving away free durians as well, and want more people to know about it, contact us at [email protected]!
