A friend of deceased Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh has criticized Malaysian rapper Namewee for complaining about lost work opportunities while investigations into Hsieh’s suspected murder continue.

Taiwanese model Fang Qiyuan, known as Sprite Fang, posted sharp criticism of the 42-year-old rapper on Facebook on 19 Nov 2024.
“You don’t have money, but at least you still have your life. You can keep writing music to generate income. However, Iris had money but is no longer alive to spend it,” wrote Fang, 42.
The criticism came after Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, posted on 17 Nov that he had lost several work opportunities after being embroiled in the case.
Fang, who was a close friend of Hsieh, appeared to blame Namewee for what happened. She suggested Hsieh would still be alive in Taiwan had she not gone abroad upon Namewee’s invitation.
“Can you pay your respects to Iris with sincerity? Death itself isn’t frightening. What’s most frightening is being forgotten by everyone,” Fang wrote.
In an Instagram story, Fang continued her criticism of Namewee’s reaction after he posted bail. She said Namewee could survive on royalties from his music and YouTube videos.
“As someone who was there when she died, shouldn’t you be more respectful? Hsieh was cremated in Malaysia. Why didn’t you go pay your respects?” Fang questioned.

On 21 Nov, Fang wrote another Facebook post: “Hsieh, I’ll live your dream for you. Go peacefully. I’ll make sure you get justice!”
Rapper Announces Work Cancellations Through End of 2026
On 18 Nov, Namewee announced on social media that he was looking for part-time jobs. All of his work through the end of 2026 has been cancelled.

He is also looking for sponsors for his upcoming Lunar New Year song after the previous sponsor withdrew, reportedly due to his arrest.
Namewee later said in a statement that he had done everything he could to save Hsieh but to no avail.
Murder Investigation Continues as Rapper Remains on Bail
Namewee surrendered himself to authorities on 5 Nov, pledging full cooperation in the investigation of Hsieh’s death.

The case was reclassified as murder after initially being treated as a sudden death.
Investigations showed that Namewee was the last person seen with Hsieh in a Kuala Lumpur hotel room on 22 Oct.
On 12 Nov, Attorney General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar stated that there was no evidence linking Namewee to Hsieh’s death. He would be released on police bail.
Namewee is out on bail until 26 Nov as Malaysian police await the autopsy report.
