Imagine being an older person. It’s the pandemic season, you’re no longer allowed to go chill together with your kakis. But what can you do? Statistically speaking, you’re the one most at risk.
Perhaps it’s time to pick up a new hobby. Read a book. Or maybe learn a few new recipes to cook for your family who now has to work from home.
But that’s you, my very logical and well-informed reader who reads Goody Feed.
And not the case for this group of people gathering at a Marsiling bus stop.
Screw social distancing am I right?
Auntie Heard Saying “Give money lo!” In Hokkien
Shin Min Daily News reporters found about seven or eight aunties and uncles sitting at the bus stop near Block 20 Marsiling Lane’s hawker centre at around 2 pm on 17 May 2020.
One auntie appeared to be a bookie of sorts, doing cash transactions with others and busy counting notes.
She was heard several times saying in Hokkien, “Give money lo!”.
About 40 Men and Women Seen Gathering in Groups
A bunch of aunties and uncles were also spotted standing by the roadside, some gathering by the open area beside the hawker centre.
Most of them were looking at their phones, believed to be horse racing broadcasts or schedules.
Now, do note that in Singapore, horses are also following the Circuit Breaker rules and Singapore Pools isn’t allowed to operate.
Apparently, some were even positioned on the overhead bridge nearby to keep an eye out for the authorities.

When police were spotted, the group at the bus stop would disperse within a few seconds. If it’s a false alarm, they would regroup.
Which you gotta admit, is actually pretty impressive considering how many people in smaller groups had been caught so far.
Same Group Gathering Since April, Brought Inconvenience to Residents
A bus driver, known only as Mr Wang, said that the same group had been gathering at the same spot since the start of April, usually staying from noon to 7 pm. Mr Wang had reported them to the police twice.
There were food packages in the area, and some smoking or drinking with their masks down. Passengers waiting for buses were also deprived of seats.
According to Mr Wang, the group usually gathers on Wednesdays and weekends, although Wednesday sees a smaller crowd. He believes that the crowd gathered in the hawker centre or the park, but swapped their locations after the restrictions.
Perhaps these are gambling gods who are very dedicated to their craft. Or maybe they are just addicts with nothing better to do. Either way, I think they deserve a clap.
Though we’ve still got to wonder: what the heck are they betting on since all horses are now staying home? Candy Crush or what?
