Have you ever worried about falling into the gap between the MRT train and the platform? For one woman, that fear turned into reality on 8 October when she lost her balance and fell into the gap.
Here’s what happened.
Woman Fell Into Gap at Bugis MRT Station After Losing Her Balance
A woman was taken to the hospital after she fell and got her leg stuck in the platform gap at Bugis MRT station on 8 October. The incident, captured on video, quickly made its rounds on social media.
The Straits Times reported that according to SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai, the accident happened around 7:30 pm when the commuter lost her balance and fell. The video shows the woman sitting between the train and the platform, with her left leg lodged in the gap below the knee.
Right after the incident, the train’s emergency communication button was activated to ensure the commuter’s safety. SMRT staff, with the help of fellow commuters, managed to free the woman’s leg from the gap.
The woman was then taken by ambulance to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for treatment. SMRT has since reached out to her and expressed their hopes for a quick recovery.
The incident caused a delay of around five minutes for train services at Bugis station.
Not the First Time This Has Happened
While rare, this isn’t the first incident of its kind.
Back in 2015, a more severe accident occurred at Boon Keng MRT station when a woman’s leg slipped into a 10cm gap between the train and the platform. The delay lasted much longer, as the Singapore Civil Defence Force had to step in to rescue her.
These incidents have led authorities to enhance safety measures, such as installing gap fillers on new trains on certain lines to reduce the space between the train and platform.
