Tragedy struck the world hard on 4 May.
Reader: What happened? More coronavirus infections? A Singaporean COVID-19 strain that mostly infects those who hang out at bubble tea stores?
Nope, worse. Bill Gates and his wife got a divorce.
Reader: *Gasps*
On that day, Bill Gates announced on Twitter that he and his wife, Melinda Gates, have amicably decided to part ways.

Of course, this sparked rumours over what caused their divorce, with some (mostly me) speculating that Melinda Gates had secretly used Apple products.
But now, another possible cause has emerged.
Divorce Between Bill Gates & Melinda Gates Reportedly Linked to Sex Offender Jeffrey Epstein
Melinda’s decision to split with her husband was in part due to her misgivings about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to the Wall Street Journal.
While Melinda first spoke to divorce lawyers in October 2019, she has reportedly been concerned about her husband’s dealings with Epstein since 2013.
Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
A 2019 report by The New York Times said that Gates had met with Epstein several times and once stayed late at his townhouse in New York.
At the time, however, a spokeswoman for Gates maintained that the meetings were for philanthropic reasons.
Marriage Was “Irretrievably Broken”
Melinda reportedly told attorneys that her marriage was “irretrievably broken”.
The couple, who have been married for 27 years, explained that they “no longer believe [they] can grow together as a couple in this next phase of [their] lives.”
“We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” they added.
Will Continue to Work Together After Divorce
If you’ve ever bumped into an ex after a break-up, you’d know how awkward it can be. Well, imagine being business partners and having to work with them all the time.
Bill Gates said that he and his wife will continue to work together after the divorce at their non-profit Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is one of the world’s largest philanthropic organisations.
The foundation aims to fight poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. It has also donated hundreds of millions of dollars to help countries tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.
Who Gets What?
The question on everyone’s lips, since the couple have an estimated net worth of US$146 billion (S$193.8 billion) and are one of the wealthiest couples in the world is: who gets what?
Reports indicate that the two have already come to an agreement on the division of their assets, but the specifics of this arrangement is not known.
With COVID-19 ravaging the globe right now, however, we have slightly more important things to worry about.
