Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed deep gratitude following the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) decisive victory in the 2025 General Election (GE2025).

The ruling party secured 65.57% of the national vote, up from 61% in the previous election, winning 87 seats in total.

“This is my first election as prime minister and secretary-general of the PAP. My team and I gave it our all in this campaign and I am deeply humbled and grateful for the results,” Wong said during the post-results press conference held around 3am on Sunday (4 May 2025).

The prime minister acknowledged the significance of the election timing, noting it took place during a “critical time” for Singapore amid economic challenges and shifts in the international order.

International Significance of Election Results

PM Wong emphasised that the election results would strengthen Singapore’s position globally.

“The results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world. Many are watching the elections closely, whether it’s international media, investors or foreign governments, they will have taken note of tonight’s results,” Wong stated.

He described the outcome as “a clear signal of trust, stability and confidence in your government,” adding that “Singaporeans, too, can draw strength from this and look ahead to our future with confidence”.

Commitment to Addressing Key Issues

The prime minister pledged that his government would focus on addressing Singaporeans’ concerns about the cost of living, housing, education, healthcare, and retirement.

“We have been working on these issues, and I assure you, we will redouble our efforts in the coming term to tackle these issues of concern,” Wong promised.

He noted that the PAP government’s “comprehensive approach” to address cost-of-living concerns was already in motion.

Economic Challenges Ahead

Wong identified economic uncertainty as a particular priority, warning that it could cause people to “feel the squeeze even more”.

The prime minister had previously warned about the impact of US tariffs potentially lasting for years, with multinational companies in semiconductors and pharmaceuticals indicating they might reconsider staying in Singapore.

Formation of New Cabinet

One immediate task for PM Wong is forming the country’s next Cabinet.

“I’m grateful that all my key members have been voted in, and Singaporeans have now given me a chance to put together the best team to serve you and to serve Singapore,” he said.

The new Cabinet lineup will be revealed “in due course”, followed by a press conference and swearing-in ceremony.

Wong mentioned that NTUC secretary-general Ng Chee Meng would potentially have a role in his next Cabinet, consistent with the roles of previous labour chiefs.

The prime minister noted that with the retirement of four Cabinet ministers – Mr Teo Chee Hean, Dr Ng Eng Hen, Mr Heng Swee Keat, and Dr Maliki Osman – he would need to assign responsibilities based on team members’ strengths and contributions.

Response to Opposition

Wong acknowledged that a desire for more opposition members and alternative voices in parliament was an issue in this election.

“We respect these views,” he said, while asking voters with such preferences to consider “the perspective of having a good, strong team in government to work effectively for you”.

Pledge to Serve All Singaporeans

The prime minister promised that the government would serve all citizens regardless of how they voted.

“My team and I will use this mandate to serve with humility and responsibility. We will serve all Singaporeans, whether you voted for the PAP or you voted for another party, everyone matters. We will serve all of you,” Wong affirmed.

He concluded by saying, “With the mandate that we have now, we will honour it by working even harder for Singapore and Singaporeans.”
