If you don’t have the habit of checking your monthly statements regularly, you might want to do so.
One man in Singapore was shocked when he saw how much his credit card was charged for on 8 Apr 2020.
Charged $961 Without Approval
Lee told STOMP that his electricity bills are automatically paid for by his credit card every month.
And on 8 Apr, he was charged $961 by Geneco “without his approval”, even though his monthly bill was only $72.26.
Which means, he’s basically paid $824.21 in excess which, we all know, is (usually) withheld to be used to future bills.
When he called Geneco, they allegedly insisted that he had “approved the transaction”.
Driven to his wit’s end, he simply cancelled his credit card because the bank could not help him either.

It Was Because Of A ‘Glitch’
After doing some checking of their own, Geneco came to the conclusion that a “glitch” in their system caused the incident.
They have since “identified its root cause” and “rectified” it.
They apologise to Mr Lee for the “inconvenience caused” and promise that they’ll continuously improve their system to “deliver the best experience to our customers”.
We all know how monthly bills work, don’t we?
If you’ve paid extra, they won’t refund you and will, instead, use it to offset the next month’s bill.
Thankfully for Mr Lee, Geneco says they are “currently assisting him with the refund process to ensure that he receives the full outstanding amount from his payment”.
Lesson Learnt
Here are a couple of lessons Mr Lee said he has learnt:
- Never automate credit card payment with small businesses
- Activate SMS alert for your credit cards
- Go through your monthly statement carefully
