The #BlackLivesMatter movement has been around since 2013.

While it might have calmed down slightly in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was reignited with a vengeance when George Floyd was choked to death by a police officer on the streets of Minneapolis.

What Happened:

On 25 May, a convenience store employee in Minneapolis called the police alleging that an African-American man – George Floyd – had used a fake $20 note to buy some cigarettes.

Several minutes later, police officers arrived and located Floyd, who was in a car. After approaching the car, one of the officers pulled his gun out and ordered Floyd to show his hands.

The officers then reportedly struggled to put Floyd in the police car.

Another office, Derek Chauvin, who arrived sometime after, pulled Floyd out of the car and pushed him onto the floor.

Chavin then knelt on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes. Two other officers knelt on the 43-year-old man’s body as well.

Despite Floyd saying “I can’t breathe,” repeatedly, Chauvin and the other officers persisted.

Six minutes later, Floyd became unresponsive. An ambulance arrived and he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy showed that he died of asphyxiation.

A bystander who recorded the horrific death uploaded it online, and it soon spread all over social media.

The video shows the police officers approaching Floyd’s car.

When the officer knocked on Floyd’s car window, he opened the car door, apologising profusely to the police officers.

One of the officers pulled the door open wider and the other pointed his gun at Floyd.

Floyd was visibly distressed and told the police officers that he was “shot the same way before”.

When the officers told him to step out of his vehicle, he begged for them not to shoot him multiple times before being pulled out.

After he was handcuffed, he was bought to the sidewalk where the officers did a quick search through his pockets.

His ex-girlfriend was also shown telling the police that he (Floyd) had some sort of mental problem with the police.

Things Took A Turn For The Worst When They Tried Getting Him Into The Police Vehicle

When the officers tried to get Floyd to enter the police vehicle, he started struggling very hard, begging them not to put him in.

He sobbed and said that he was “claustrophobic” and that “he can’t breathe”.

When the officers managed to push him into the vehicle, he wriggled his way to the other side of the vehicle and attempted to exit.

Two other officers tried to stop him but he managed to wriggle half of his body out of the vehicle.

That was when Floyd was bought to the ground and Chauvin knelt on his neck.

The officers could be heard telling him to “stop moving”.

When Floyd told the officers that he can’t breathe, Chauvin told him that, “You’re fine. You’re talking fine.”

Another officer could be seen using his left leg to restrain Floyd’s legs and idly picking a pebble off the police car’s tyre.

People Tried Getting Chauvin To Let Him Up

By then, a small crowd had formed around the spectacle.

They complained about the treatment but Chauvin persisted in his actions.

One of the men could be heard telling the officers to check Floyd’s pulse.

A fellow officer, Lane, was asking if they should roll Floyd onto his side, to which Chauvin said there’s no need to.

When Lane voiced out his concern, Chauvin simply said that’s why they had the ambulance coming.
