Mercedes driver George Russell dominated the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix on 5 Oct 2025, converting pole position into a commanding win at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The British driver led from start to finish, claiming his second victory of the season and fifth career triumph.
Russell’s Flawless Performance
Russell qualified on pole with a new track record time of 1:29.158, marking Mercedes’ first pole at the circuit since Lewis Hamilton in 2018. The race began at 8pm local Singapore time.
The 27-year-old maintained his lead throughout the 62-lap race, building a margin over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen before the pit stop sequence. Russell eventually crossed the line 5.4 seconds clear of Verstappen.
McLaren Secures Championship Despite Team Tensions
McLaren clinched their second consecutive constructors’ championship with six races remaining in the season, matching the joint record for the earliest the title has been won. Lando Norris finished third and Oscar Piastri fourth, providing enough points to seal the crown.
The championship victory was overshadowed by drama between the McLaren teammates on the opening lap. Norris, starting fifth, made an aggressive move past Kimi Antonelli and then attempted to overtake Piastri at Turn 3.
The manoeuvre resulted in contact, with Norris first brushing Verstappen’s Red Bull before colliding with Piastri, nearly sending the Australian into the barrier. The incident damaged Norris’s front wing.
Championship Standings Tighten
Piastri’s championship lead over Norris now stands at 22 points following the Singapore result. Verstappen finished second but remains 63 points behind Piastri in the drivers’ standings.
Piastri’s troubles compounded during his pit stop, which took 5.2 seconds and effectively ended his chances of contending for the podium. The Australian battled on most of the race on medium tyres but couldn’t recover lost ground.
McLaren’s Historic Turnaround
The constructors’ title represents McLaren’s 10th championship and their second in as many years. The team’s last constructors’ championship before 2024 came in 1998 with Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard.
Remaining Podium Positions
Kimi Antonelli finished fifth for Mercedes in his first Singapore outing, adding to the Silver Arrows’ points tally.
Charles Leclerc claimed sixth ahead of Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton in seventh.
Hamilton exceeded track limits multiple times during the final laps. He was given a five-second penalty, dropping to eighth in the rankings behind Fernando Alonso.
The F1 championship now heads to the United States Grand Prix in Austin from 17 to 19 Oct 2025.
