GetGo Car Crashes Into Slip Road from PIE; 23YO Driver Taken to Hospital Conscious

23-Year-Old Hospitalised After GetGo Car Accident on PIE; Raises Safety Concerns

A GetGo car was involved in an accident just two days ago, on the evening of 6 Jan, along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) heading towards Changi Airport.

The Straits Times reported that the incident occurred around 9.20 pm that day.

A 47-second video of the accident was posted onto Facebook by SG Road Vigilante – SGRV.

The GetGo vehicle was travelling on the expressway, just before reaching the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry, when it suddenly swerved to the left.

Being close to the divider at that moment, the abrupt swerve caused the car to collide with the divider.

The impact was so severe that it nearly overturned the car, eventually sending it onto another slip road.

Furthermore, the GetGo car struck a lamp post on the slip road leading into Kallang Way and caused damage to the plants along the divider.

Young GetGo User, Taken to Hospital Conscious

The driver, a 23-year-old male, was taken to Changi General Hospital.

Remarkably, he remained conscious throughout the ordeal, as noted by the Straits Times.

Police investigations into the crash are currently underway.

This incident is not an isolated case of GetGo-related accidents involving young drivers.

Just in the past year, there have been several notable incidents.

In April, another 23-year-old driver reportedly crashed into parked cars at a HDB multi-storey car park while driving at 50 km per hour.

A coincidence that both of them are 23-year-olds?

Then, in July, a tragic incident occurred involving a 31-year-old GetGo user.

The driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, ran a red light and collided at high speed with a public bus, service number 117.

Tragically, the driver succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

A key factor in this accident was that the driver did not possess a valid driver’s licence.

Again, in December, another young driver using the GetGo service was caught speeding and was found to be driving without a licence.

GetGo, launched in 2021, offers an hourly car rental service that does not require a deposit.

Customers can choose between regular or electric vehicles and can rent them for periods as short as one hour.

To use the service, drivers must be at least 19 years old and have a minimum of one year’s driving experience.

For those aged 25 and over, no specific driving experience is required. However, probationary and junior licences are not accepted, as per the terms stated on GetGo’s website.

The rules seem strict. But are they being adequately followed and monitored?
