Lest you haven’t been following the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), here’s a brief update on what’s happening.
Last week, this image went viral and for good reasons.
I guess you know how the Internet react.
Is it going to be Carrefour-ed?
Are we all going to Redmart our groceries now?
Would days of walking aimlessly in a hypermart be days of the past?

Well, Giant responded through their friendly aunty.
In case you can’t read, here’s what is written:
TO ALL MY GSSC FRIENDS! Aunty CONFIRM that Giant is not closing down! Aiyoh. Aunty heard so many rumours over the weekend, so Aunty went to kaypoh and ask my Giant Kaki Sammie and she CONFIRM + CHOP that Giant will continue to offer great value and convenience!
In fact, Aunty tell you all a secret k! Giant is planning to open more stores leh! So don’t worry, you all can continue to enjoy good lobangs from Giant!
So DON’T spread the rumours uh! Just trust Aunty hehe!
Just something to add: aunty so cutie, I trust aunty.
But anyways, there’s no mention on the authenticity of the image, though the information is rather accurate: the first two are closed, and today, it’s reported that the VivoCity outlet is closing.
Image Supposedly Not Taken at Any Giant Outlet
According to the report, a Giant spokesperson mentioned that the notice in the image isn’t put up in any Giant outlet, though she did not confirm whether the information is based from real information or whether it’s displayed internally.
On Wednesday, the spokesperson also confirmed the impending closure of the Vivo City branch. She said, “We were given notice that the lease will not be renewed when it expires in the first quarter of 2019.”
Vivo City Branch, The Bigly Super-Super Hypermart
If you’ve not been to the outlet before, I’ll describe it in one word.
Gigantic.
I’m serious.
Spanning two levels, and also calling themselves Vivomart, the branch has everything you need and even things you don’t need: I’ve been there a few times and all the times, I lost my way inside the hypermart. And all the times, I came in from different entrances and exited at different exits.
It’s that big.
Opened in 2006, it is also the only Giant hypermart with a unique name (Vivomart).
Reason for Closure: Allegedly Due to Rising Rental
According to Today’s report, a sales assistant mentioned that rising rental was one of the reasons for the closure.
Giant reviews its branches regularly and open / close new stores “depending on factors such as performance, lease renewals (and) site potential.”
NTUC FairPrice is allegedly taking over the space, but they did not disclose any details. VivoCity also kept the information to themselves, only saying that a “major and reputable grocer” is taking over.
Well, it must be Amazon Prime, right?

Allegations, Allegations and more Allegations
One thing to know is that the entire saga (if you’d call it a “saga”) stems from one leaked image that could or could not be real.
After all, chain outlets come and go regularly—we won’t have noticed as long as our needs are served.
So since they are all allegations, there’s nothing to be concerned about—especially so if NTUC FairPrice is really going to take over the lease.
Or Amazon Prime. You never know.
