Hong Kong actress and singer Gillian Chung has revealed her ongoing battle with body dysmorphia after losing significant weight for her latest film role. The 44-year-old star shed considerable weight to portray a cancer patient in the new Hong Kong movie Good Goodbye.
Chung has faced weight fluctuation problems for years due to hormonal imbalances. She frequently gains and loses weight, only to see it rebound afterwards. The phrase “Gillian has put on” became a recurring trending topic on Weibo, causing her considerable stress.
Weight Loss Challenges Intensify with Age for Good Goodbye Role
The most challenging aspect of Chung’s role in Good Goodbye was slimming down to convincingly portray a terminally ill person. She admitted that losing weight has become increasingly difficult as she ages.
“As I’m getting older and my metabolism is slowing down, losing weight really isn’t easy for me,” Chung said in a recent interview.
The actress then made a candid confession about her mental health struggles. “I am not insecure about my looks but I have body dysmorphia,” she revealed.
Her dramatic weight loss for the film role contrasted sharply with her appearance just months earlier. In December 2024, Chung faced online criticism for gaining weight during her Twins concert tour with fellow group member Charlene Choi.
Fans Rally Behind Chung’s Honest Revelation About Appearance Anxiety
The interview video went viral, prompting an outpouring of support from netizens. Many praised Chung for her honesty about appearance anxiety and body image struggles.
“Gillian has been plump or thin, but she’s never been ugly,” one fan commented. Another supporter reminded the star that she “doesn’t have to be stick thin” and emphasised that “the most important is to stay healthy”.
“Thank you for sharing about your anxiety, turns out celebrities are just like us,” wrote another netizen.
