Cops from China Didn’t Save Girl from Drowning As They Didn’t Know How to Swim

Normally, when faced with dangerous situations, having your neighbourhood friendly policemen around puts you at incredible ease.

Unfortunately, for the people of Anhui in China, they might not have that luxury in the near future.

Here’s what happened.

Cops from China Didn’t Save Girl from Drowning

On 4 Dec 2020, a 17-year-old girl reportedly walked into the shallow waters of a river in Anhui, China.

When members of the public saw what happened, they reported the incident to the police.

Two police officers subsequently arrived at the scene to try and persuade the student to get back to shore.

Unfortunately, she saw their arrival, she immediately jumped into the deep end of the river.

That was when things went wrong.

Instead of jumping into the deep waters to rescue the girl, the two policemen stood in the shallow waters and watched the girl instead.

Only after more policemen arrived did they held hands and walked into the deeper part of the river to try and rescue her.

While they eventually managed to pull her to shore, she was confirmed dead after emergency treatment was made to no avail.

The 17-year-old high school student had drowned right in front of everyone’s eyes.

They Didn’t Know How to Swim

According to Jiupai News of Hubei province, which is based in Wuhan, four of the five policemen didn’t know how to swim.

This includes the deputy head of the county’s Leiyang police station as well as three auxiliary policemen present at the scene.

After footage of the incident was posted online by an eyewitness, a controversy was caused.

Some netizens asking if the policemen were afraid of getting wet or just wants to watch someone die.

There was also a rumour going around online that one of the two policemen who were present earlier in the incident had not wanted to enter the water because “it was cold”.

Police’s Response

The police issued a statement to clarify the incident.

They had received a report on the girl about to commit suicide via drowning at Jishui bridge.

They emphasised that they had “tried their best”, and that four of the five policemen did not know how to swim.

By the time the last policeman took off his uniform and jumped into the river to rescue her, it was far too late.

They reiterate that the internet has “distorted the facts”.

It was also reported that the Public Security Bureau of Wangjiang county in Anqing, Anhui province had suspended a policeman and three auxiliary officers.

They’ve launched an investigation into the incident to check if they had responded appropriately when trying to rescue the girl.

Any findings of the investigation will be dealt with seriously in line with the regulations and laws.
