I remember my first date with prettygirl99. I also remember feeling really awkward, clueless and mesmerised. Yet, despite all of my socially inept behaviour, I remembered one thing:
Gotta be a gentleman, gotta do the right thing, gotta pay the bill.
And so when the bill came, I flashed my card, an object of such shininess that it lost out only to my million dollar smile.
“Erm-” she started to say.
“No please.” I looked at her and winked. “Let me.”
“Erm no, that’s not a credit card,” she said. “That’s your Arcade card.”
I looked. It read “Tap Zone” on the front.
“Oh.” I glanced at the hapless waiter, who was looking at me with something akin to pity. “Erm… tap?”
“It’s okay.” She shot me a billion dollar smile. “I wanna pay for my own share.”
In the end, we split the bill, and my brief moment of valiance turned out to be something that ranked amongst the lowest points of my life. Thankfully, however, she didn’t mind having a fool for a date, and we went out on our second. And third. And so on.
But while I was pretty lucky to have such an understanding date, this other guy wasn’t really blessed in that department. Indeed, it speaks volumes when you ask for a second date…
Only to be called gay in response.
What happened?
Just recently, a young man posted a rather interesting ‘first date’ experience on Reddit, in which he shared how a girl had ordered €110 (about SGD$170) worth of food and expected him to pay, even though he was a mere student.
As it is, this is what had apparently gone down.
At the start, the girl had ordered a lobster worth €30 (SGD$46), and a bottle of fancy wine that cost €80 (SGD$123).
On the other hand, the guy called for spaghetti and a beer, a combination that set him back by around €17.50 (SGD$27).
Apparently, the date went pretty well, or at least until the bill came. Because he couldn’t afford the price of it all, he proposed that they go dutch, and the girl complied.
Expecting a happy ending? Think again
After their prospective first date, the young man asked for a second one. But to his surprise, he was promptly turned down. The reason?
He had asked her to pay for her own food when he should have settled the bill himself.
“After what you did last time, you expect me to go out with you again?” she reportedly said. “Wow! You made me pay for my own food and drink while you paid only for yours! WTF!”
After seeing her less-than-content reply, the guy didn’t take it lying down.
Which definitely didn’t appease the girl, because she started getting a little…
Homophobic.
And that led to an all-important plot twist in the story.
Well, honestly…
I probably wouldn’t have asked for a second date if she spent the entire first date talking about ****ing another guy.
In an interview with Bored Panda, the guy revealed that he’d usually settle the bill, but since he’s a student who works 60 hours a week to clear food, book and other expenses, it was only logical for her to pay her own astronomical expenses.
“I obviously couldn’t afford to pay 110 euros for her food. I asked her out again to apologise pretty much for the previous time, hoping we can go to a cheaper place so I could make up for it, but as you can see, the result was really bad,” the guy said.
And the fact that the girl was talking non-stop about how much she was into another guy, didn’t exactly help matters either.
Criticism
After news broke out (and went viral), a majority of the netizens criticised the girl for a vain attempt to procure a free meal.
“Imagine her face when she found out she had to pay the €110 herself,” a netizen said.
“Even if someone else was paying, I wouldn’t even dream of taking such advantage. How were these people raised?” another Reddit user commented.
Yeah, such savagery. Truly the Netizens at work. But the only thing here?
I kinda agree with them this time around.
