A five-year-old girl was trapped inside a GetGO rental car for 20 minutes before being rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The incident occurred due to a suspected door system failure.

The accident happened around 11:00 PM last Friday, 25 Apr 2025, at the foot of an HDB block in Woodlands.

Panic Moments for Family

The mother of the trapped child later shared online that the incident happened as her family of four was preparing to use a GetGO car to return home.

After unlocking the vehicle through the mobile app, she let her five-year-old daughter enter first, but the doors suddenly locked automatically, trapping the child inside.

When the mother tried to unlock the doors again through the app, the system displayed an “information error” message.

She quickly contacted GetGO’s customer service, but even after five minutes of attempts, the staff couldn’t remotely unlock the doors.

“My daughter was crying. I was afraid she would become emotionally distressed, so I tried to comfort her while staying on the phone with customer service,” the mother said.

Video footage provided by the mother shows the shared car parked in an open-air car park below the HDB block. The girl can be seen trying to press the unlock button from inside, but the doors remained locked.

In the video, the distraught mother says she felt both helpless and desperate as she watched her frightened daughter through the car window.

“Can you imagine that feeling? Seeing my daughter alone inside the car and not being able to do anything about it,” she explained.

SCDF Forced Entry to Rescue Child

Due to concerns for her daughter’s safety, the mother called the SCDF for help. Upon arrival, SCDF personnel successfully pried open the car door and rescued the girl.

The video shows several SCDF officers surrounding the vehicle. Once the driver’s door was opened, the child immediately embraced her father, visibly shaking with swollen, red eyes from crying.

When her mother asked, “Are you okay?” the girl responded with a slight nod.
