When you book a staycation, the one thing you want to do is relax.Â
With a comfy bed, delicious food, and a respite from your boss’ emails, a staycation can provide some much-needed peace and tranquility.
But, as you know, things don’t always go according to plan, and something could end up putting a damper on your staycation, like a trip to the hospital.
10YO Allegedly Found Glass Bits in Apple Juice in a Sentosa Restaurant During a Staycation
A family of four had a rather unpalatable experience during their staycation after one of their kids ended up going to the hospital.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the mum, 40, recounted the incident which occurred on Friday morning (4 Dec).
The family was having breakfast in their hotel when their elder daughter noticed something wrong with her apple juice after drinking a mouthful.
There was a piece of “plastic” in her mouth.
Thinking nothing of it, the 10-year-old simply spat it out and carried on drinking the juice.
Unbeknownst to her, that piece of “plastic” was actually glass.Â
When she finished her drink, the girl found more glass pieces of different sizes lying at the bottom of the bottle, which would make even Dwayne Johnson shriek.
The pieces were definitely glass, as they made a clinking sound when the bottle was shaken.
Shocked, the mother quickly inspected her younger daughter’s drink, as they had both ordered apple juice for breakfast.
The older child said she didn’t swallow any of the pieces, but the family informed the staff of the incident anyway.
The restaurant then offered to send the girl to hospital.
Didn’t Ask About Daughter’s Well-being
The restaurant informed hotel management about the incident when the mum said she was going to call the police.
However, their response only infuriated her further.
The mum claimed that the hotel management didn’t ask about her daughter’s well-being, and even goaded her to bring them to court if she wanted to seek compensation.
That’s not the kind of response you want after your child nearly swallows glass bits.
Outraged by their response, the woman called the police.
She then brought her daughter to the hospital as a precaution. The 10-year-old was later warded for observation.
The woman said she wasn’t particularly concerned about compensation; she was merely protecting her right as a consumer.
At the time, she said she was considering reporting the issue to the authorities.
The police have since confirmed they have received a report on the incident.
Glass-Blended Smoothie
This brings to mind a similar incident that occurred last November, where a family at Slappy Cakes was served a smoothie with glass bits in it.
The mum had taken a sip and noticed the drink had a rather “grainy” texture. She later discovered that those grains were actually blended glass pieces.Â
Horrified, she turned to her children and instructed them not to drink the smoothies, but it was too late; her seven-year-old son had already consumed some of it.
He complained of pain in his throat a few hours later, and was brought to the hospital.
It turned out that a staff member had accidentally broken a glass while preparing the drink, and didn’t realise a shard had fallen into the blender.
The case was later handed over to the Singapore Food Agency for investigation.
Incidentally, I have chosen to drink water from the tap for the rest of my life.
