It appears that no gender is truly free from danger.

Considering how a plethora of young males, too, have suffered at the hands of sexual abusers.

A jobless man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane for the sexual abuse of two young boys.

Apparently, he was the godfather of the victims. The offences against the older boy were committed between October and December 2019.

He also molested the younger boy.

The boys and their mother were forced to vacate their home back in 2019 due to a family dispute.

Seeking accommodation at a shelter, they proceeded to await the results of their rental flat application.

It was then that the accused, and his wife, offered the trio a temporary home in their one-room flat.

After going through social service workers, who were previously allocated to the boys due to their mother’s “lack of adequate parenting skills”, the family was permitted to stay at the man’s flat.

“Papa”

Apparently, the boys called their godfather “Papa”, who would frequently indulge in video games with them, sign their consent forms and look after them while the others were gone.

Unfortunately, the daddy tendencies did not stop there.

While the rest were asleep, the man would sodomise the older boy.

He also violated the victim while taking a shower together.

Later on, the older brother learnt that his younger brother had been molested as well. Worried that they would become homeless, however, they kept mum about it.

It was not until they moved to their rental flat that they finally informed their mother. With the assistance of their designated social care worker, the matter was eventually brought up to the police.

The boys are currently under the charge of the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The older boy has since gone through eight counselling sessions.

Sentencing

In court, High Court judge Mavis Chionh stated that the man had taken advantage of his position, and targeted a considerably vulnerable victim.

“Instead of providing the victim with a home in which he could find comfort and security, the accused cynically abused the relationship of responsibility and trust he had with the victim. He exploited his access to the victim for the reprehensible purpose of satisfying his own sexual urges,” she said.

The man eventually pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual penetration.

Three other charges, including one for touching the younger boy inappropriately and one unrelated charge for harming a bus driver, were also taken into consideration.

Other Instances

Though still not as prevalent as cases involving the other gender, instances of sexual abuse pertaining to young boys have been rather rampant of late.

On Thursday (1 Apr), 21-year-old Malaysian Clement Tan Jun Yan was sentenced to 18 months in jail for molesting two underage males.

He had committed the offences in separate incidents in 2020.

And on the same day, 60-year-old Mohamed Taha Ahmed was sentenced to 14 months’ jail for molesting an underage boy.

He was arrested last year on 28 October after targeting a 12-year-old boy and following him home.

On 23 Feb 2021, it was reported that MSF has launched a new hotline, the National Anti-Violence Helpline, to handle family violence as well as other forms of abuse or neglect.
