Ah, private-hire rides. Sometimes our saviour when the sky decides to release all its angry tears on us, and sometimes the bane of our existence when the prices skyrocket during peak hours.
But we must thank the drivers for being there for all of us poor plebs without cars—whether rain or shine, low prices or high prices.
Though this pandemic has made it much harder for the drivers to earn their keep, Gojek has just announced a few measures to support their drivers and customers through Phase 3 (Heightened Alert).
Gojek Cuts Commissions By Half to Boost Drivers’ Income
According to The Straits Times, the ride-hailing operator will halve the commission it receives from its drivers from 21 June till at least the end of 2022 to help them increase their earnings.
This means that Gojek drivers will now be able to keep 90% of the fare of every trip, instead of the usual 80%.
They added that the cut in commissions come with “no performance requirements” and will be available in the long term so as to give its drivers “greater assurance and stability”.
Yay!
Fares for Gojek Passengers Remain Unchanged
In addition, the company’s spokesperson announced that fares for customers will remain the same despite the boost to drivers’ income, reported TODAYonline.
Yay again!
Previously, a survey conducted found that 50% of its drivers would like lower service fees for better earnings. Gojek noted that the move would help lessen the impact of COVID-19 on its drivers.
“These measures will have a profound impact on the livelihoods of our driver-partners, increasing their take-home earnings while giving them more flexibility by reducing their dependence on incentives,” said Gojek’s general manager, Mr Lien Choong Luen.
In addition, Gojek will be introducing a new payout of S$3 to drivers who have to drive 3km or more to pick up their passengers as a reward. All drivers, including the GoCar and GoTaxi trips, are eligible.
Drivers may also be awarded up to S$100 daily if they complete more trips during peak hours.
The move comes after Grab had also introduced their own measures to tide over the pandemic, including a S$1 fare hike to improve drivers’ earnings. Their 20% commission remains unchanged.
In their statement, Gojek said that the changes reflect their significant investment in Singapore, hoping that it will “further strengthen its market share and maximise business potential in the country.”
