Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek have made travelling a lot easier for many of us.
Most of the time, they are hassle-free and let you get to your desired destination quickly and efficiently.
However, we do still come across the occasional Grab or Gojek horror stories, with riders fuming over having to deal with unpleasant or rude drivers.
Cai, a mother of an 11-year-old, had such a shockingly horrible experience with Gojek that she ended up lodging a police report about it.
Driver Kicked Out The Girl For Having A Pet Bird
So here’s what happened:
Cai booked a ride through Gojek for her 11-year-old daughter last Sunday night (13 October 2019).
It was around 8.30pm, and she wanted to send her daughter to her grandmother’s house, where she would be staying for the week.
Basically, Cai lives in Sengkang and her daughter goes to school in Ang Mo Kio. So to make life easier for everyone, she often stays with her grandmother in Ang Mo Kio during weekdays, and only returns to her Sengkang home on weekends.
After seeing her daughter off and informing the driver that she was travelling alone, Cai went back home and tracked the car’s location on her app to ensure that her daughter would be dropped off safely.
Everything seemed normal on the app and the car was still on the way to the location, but her daughter suddenly turned up back at home 15 minutes later.
According to her daughter, the driver had stopped the car halfway and yelled at her to get out because she had a pet bird with her. Although the girl asked to be sent back home, he refused and left her on the side of the road.
Girl Had To Walk Home Alone In The Dark
With no phone and no money, the girl then had to walk back home in the dark. She was not too sure of the way back and had to get help from a passer-by that she saw on the way.
It’s 2019 and she let her daughter go out by herself with no phone and no money?
The driver, known as Lee, refused to pick up any of Cai’s calls or cancel the trip. Frustrated, she left him a voice message demanding an explanation and he finally called back, only to swear and yell at her non-stop.
“At the very least, he could have just sent her back to the pick-up point or dropped her off at the nearest safe location like a police post or a shopping mall instead of just leaving her by the road,” Cai said in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao.
The 40-year-old then decided to lodge a police report because she wanted to look into the matter further.
According to the report, the girl boarded the car at 8.30pm and reached home at 8.45pm, after being kicked out by Lee.
First Time Experiencing Something Like This
She has never experienced anything like this on any other ride before, despite usually bringing the pet bird along whenever she goes to stay at her grandmother’s place for the week.
According to Cai, the bird was kept in its cage which was carried in a bag to ensure the car would be kept clean.
Seems like both parties are in the wrong here.
The driver had the right to refuse to take the ride if he was uncomfortable with the pet bird, and it seems like he was not aware of it because the mother had not informed him about it beforehand, which she should have.
However, he could also have been a lot nicer about it instead of leaving the girl out alone in the dark.
Gojek’s website states that it does not provide any special pet services. Alternatively, Cai could have chosen to travel with GrabPet, which is a rather new service by Grab that is meant for ferrying passengers with pets.
Gojek has said that they looked into the matter as soon as they were alerted to it, and that they will cooperate with all involved parties to resolve it.
