Take a rational person and place him in an office, and he’ll still be a rational person.
Take a rational person and place him in a coffee shop, and he’ll still be a rational person.
But place a rational person behind the wheel and he’ll turn into a maniac who’ll destroy anyone who comes in his way.
These people engage in reckless driving behaviours because they have the patience of a toddler and would rather die than waste any time.
Then, there are those who drive recklessly because they enjoy it. Like this Golf GTI driver who can’t stop racing on the roads.
Involved in Race That Led to Accident on CTE
On 29 July at around 9pm, an accident occurred along the Central Expressway (CTE) towards Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5.
The accident left a van overturned in the bushes, and the van driver and his passenger had to be taken to hospital as a result.
So, what caused the accident?
Dashcam footage that was later shared online showed two cars racing each on the CTE shortly before the accident.
One of the cars, of course, was the black Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchback.
Both drivers, aged 30 and 41, were arrested for dangerous driving.
The reason why we have separate street tracks for F1 races here is that it’s generally not a great idea to have high-speed races along expressways.
Because it can lead to accidents and even death.
But this particular driver seems to enjoy the rush of the race too much to worry about the safety of motorists around him.
Caught Swerving in and Out of Traffic Recklessly On Previous Occasions
On Monday (3 Aug), Facebook page SG Road Vigilante uploaded a compilation of dashcam footage which showed the Golf GTI swerving in and out of traffic recklessly on previous occasions.
The first instance occurred on 7 July, where the Golf dangerously glided past a car in front of it that was filtering to the right lane.
On 16 Jan 2019, the same car was seen recklessly weaving between two cars to overtake them.
And on 23 Nov 2019, the Golf kept filtering between the right and middle lane without signalling to overtake a few cars ahead of it.
Both drivers were arrested on 29 July. They had their vehicles impounded and their driving licences suspended.
Harsh Penalties
Those convicted of dangerous driving face a jail term of 12 months, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
And if the offender causes hurt to another person while driving dangerously, they could be imprisoned for up to two years, fined up to S$10,000, or both.
