If you’re a late sleeper and have always been told that sleeping in late is a trait of a lazy, unproductive person, here’s one new study that might just make those early risers who have been criticizing you swallow their words: night owls might have higher IQ than others.

Okay, this isn’t cold hard fact, but it’s based on a few studies. At the London School of Economics and Political Science, evolutionary scientist Satoshi Kanazawa found that this could be due to what our ancestors have been doing, and concluded that children who are more intelligent tend to grow up as nocturnal adults who sleep late and wake up late—both weekdays and weekend. Fascinating, isn’t it?

According to yet another study, night owl tend to be more creative, especially so when they’re working late at night. In the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, tests were done on two groups of people, and those who work in late at night aced the tests.

And age doesn’t matter. One study in University of Madrid that involved 1,000 teens show that night owls are smarter: tests were done and the night owl scored better than the early risers.

Of course, even given the results of the studies, it doesn’t necessarily mean that night owls are definitely smarter than early risers. There are tons of examples that show the habits of successful people, and one of them is waking up early and working on important tasks before anyone else is awake.

All those studies just give night owl another reason to sleep in. Because hey, we’re intelligent people, that’s why we sleep late, okay?
