As humans, we often judge others, typically keeping our thoughts to ourselves. Voicing these thoughts might lead to severe consequences: Just like the case with the former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin.
Or in the case of this particular woman.
Mother & Daughter Accused of Attacking Stranger Who Confronted Them Over Gossip in Supermarket
On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm on 2 August, an extraordinary incident unfolded within the bustling confines of the NTUC FairPrice supermarket at Bukit Merah Central.
An elderly customer, identified only by her surname, Huang, narrated the shocking events of the day to the Shin Min Daily News.
Huang, who is in her seventies, was running her routine errands when she noticed two other female shoppers, appearing to be a mother and daughter.
The pair, seemingly in their sixties and eighties, respectively, caught her attention as they strolled around the supermarket, hands clasped tightly together in a display of familial bond.
As she continued her shopping, Huang found herself increasingly irritated by the pair’s incessant chatter about others’ affairs. As someone who abhors discussing other people’s personal matters, the duo’s unrelenting gossip was a cause of considerable agitation.
Eventually, she found herself turning her gaze towards the pair, her displeasure clear. And when their chatter about others’ lives persisted, Huang once again glanced in their direction, this time murmuring, “Always gossiping about others.”
Whether her comment reached their ears, she wasn’t certain.
The Sudden Attack
What she didn’t expect, however, was the escalation that followed. In a surreal turn of events, the mother and daughter reportedly attacked Huang near the beverage and biscuit display. In an act of unanticipated violence, they knocked her to the ground, leaving her sprawled helplessly on the supermarket floor.
“The daughter seized my hand while the mother yanked at my hair,” Huang recounted the harrowing incident. “Together, they shoved me to the ground. They were much stronger than I had anticipated. I was caught off-guard and had no chance to defend myself. My forehead hit the ground hard.”
To add insult to injury, after the physical assault, the mother and daughter purportedly lashed out at her verbally in Hokkien.
The arrival of the police soon followed, with officers reviewing the incident via CCTV footage and conducting separate interviews with the involved parties.
Following the altercation, Huang commented, “After the police had finished, the mother and daughter simply left. It was surreal. I never anticipated that a simple trip to the supermarket could result in such an assault.”
While the repercussions of this incident continue to unfold, one question has captivated everyone’s curiosity: Just what were the mother and daughter gossiping about to trigger such an unprecedented chain of events?
