Residents have not been happy with GrabFood as of late.

When the government imposed the circuit breaker to curb the spread of the coronavirus, some customers complained that the food delivery platform had increased their service fees.

But what made customers really angry was that GrabFood ended their subscription plans two weeks after the circuit breaker started.

When asked why they stopped the plans all of a sudden, GrabFood said that it constantly reviews its subscription plans and hopes to “come back with more exciting plans soon”.

Many felt the discontinuation of the plan wasn’t fair, but hey, maybe it had nothing to do with the circuit brea-

A disgruntled customer has taken to Facebook to vent his frustrations about a perceived “lack of ethics” displayed by food delivery platform GrabFood.

In a post on Friday (19 June), user Jelyn Lee criticized GrabFood for reinstating its subscription plans after the circuit breaker and Phase 1 ended.

Here’s what her post says:

“WOW, I’m amazed by the lack of ethics displayed by GrabFood.

Before CB: There were subscription plans for Grabfood, i.e. $9.99 for 50 deliveries (with min. order of $10 per trip).

During CB: NO subscription plans. Suddenly all of it was quietly removed because “they have plans to do so way before CB.”

So COINCIDENTALLY they cancelled it after CB started for a few days. And then some “service fee” thingy started, charging extra few cents per order.

After CB: Subscription plans came out again. I thought they had plans to cancelled this away? Oh and with min. order of $18.

Only 4 words to describe their business behaviour: 趁人之危.

Didn’t ‘Quietly’ Stop Free Delivery Plan

Before the circuit breaker, GrabFood had a free delivery plan where subscribers could get free delivery on up to 50 GrabFood orders each month for just $9.99.

The vouchers were only valid with GrabFood orders of at least S$10 and were not applicable for long-distance and islandwide delivery.

Pretty good deal, right?

But then the deal was taken away sometime after the circuit breaker started, and many customers said they weren’t even aware that their subscription plans were suddenly terminated.

In response, GrabFood said they had informed subscribers via its mobile application and email:

However, some customers couldn’t find any notification or email informing them of the stoppage, and many of those who did get it found in their Grab mailbox, which is typically full of discounts, promotions, and advertisements.

Who even checks their Grab mailbox?

According to Grab’s terms and conditions for its subscriptions, however, Grab says it reserves the right to make any changes to users’ plans at any time.

Taking Advantage Of Covid-19 Outbreak

Lee is upset because she feels that the food delivery company’s taking advantage of the Covid-19 outbreak, where people had to stay at home more and food delivery orders increased.

Now, that the country has moved to Phase 2 and people are eating out again, GrabFood has apparently brought their subscription plans back.

It may not be as sketchy as it seems, but Grab doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to these things.

In 2018, the company cut user discounts and driver incentives just two months after it acquired its rival Uber, reported The Straits Times.

Driver incentives and customer discounts were employed heavily by both Grab and Uber before the latter’s exit.

Well, there are many other food delivery companies out there, some of whom started their business during the circuit breaker.
