A 16-year-old student from Yilong County, Sichuan Province, died on 18 May 2025 — just one day after his classmates and teachers held a special graduation photo session at his hospital bedside.

Ren Junjie, a junior high school student in Sichuan Province, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma last year, forcing him to take a leave of absence from school to undergo treatment.

In early May, Ren’s health began to deteriorate rapidly.

After learning about their classmate’s worsening condition, over 60 of Ren’s teachers and classmates decided to organize a graduation photo shoot with him at the hospital.

On 17 May, the group walked approximately 2km to Yilong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, carrying benches for the special occasion.

Footage showed Ren dressed in his school uniform and wearing an oxygen mask while lying on a hospital bed pushed by six male classmates.

The students arranged themselves in the hospital courtyard, leaving the central position for their ailing classmate.

Besides taking graduation photos, Ren’s classmates brought letters, flowers, and other gifts to encourage him to recover and return for their first year in high school.

A teacher at the school explained that the event was initiated by the class teacher, who wanted to limit publicity around the event to avoid distracting other students from their upcoming final exams.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Ren passed away at 4am the following day on 18 May.

Despite the tragic outcome, Ren’s father expressed deep gratitude to his son’s classmates for not forgetting about him.

“The graduation photo was voluntary, but over 60 classmates came to the hospital. As a parent, I was deeply moved by their kindness. They neither forgot nor excluded my child,” the father said, adding that he would always treasure the memory.
