Grandma & Granddaughter Fall Down Stairs of Double Decker Bus Due to ‘Sudden Movement’ But Netizens Disagree

There are many dangerous places in this world: the Niagara Falls, your parents’ room and that toilet people claimed to have heard voices in.

Yet, even so, none of them compares to this one thing:

The upper deck of a double-decker bus.

Indeed, this level, which Chuck Norris himself has proclaimed as ‘unplayable’, has terrified bus riders for centuries.

“It’s downright terrifying,” Chuck once said. “I nearly cried for my mummy!”

But what is it that makes this bus level so… traumatising? The answer, claims John Sick, does not lie in the fact that there’s no driver on the upper deck of a bus. It lies in the staircase.

“I’ve fought many worthy opponents,” he said. “But that staircase is one I’ll be willing to sacrifice my dog for. Happily.”

And to support my hypothesis, I present this article headline to you guys:

Grandma & Granddaughter Fall Down Stairs of Double Decker Bus Due to ‘Sudden Movement’ But Netizens Disagree

Though of course, as the latter part of the headline implies, it might not have been the stairs that are at fault.

“Well, just gotta check it out,” said John Sick.

What happened?

According to Stomper Joreen, whose three-year-old daughter and mother-in-law were the ones involved in the incident, they had fallen down while trying to alight from a bus.

Apparently, the pair were onboard the upper deck of SBS Transit bus service 5 at around 12:00 p.m., on 2 Feb. Having tried to alight from the double-decker bus at Bukit Merah Bus Interchange, they inadvertently fell down the stairs.

“I was at work when I received a call from my mother-in-law about the incident.

“She said the two of them were trying to alight from the bus when my daughter fell down due to a sudden movement.

“My mother-in-law immediately held on to my daughter’s arm, but fell down the stairs too.

“They both landed on the lower deck of the bus.”

Injuries

Joreen then contributed photos of her daughter’s injuries, which consisted primarily of scratches and bruises on both arms and legs. The child’s back, as well as the back of her head, were affected as well.

“My mother-in-law, who is in her 60s, suffered some scratches and bruises on her legs and forehead area but declined going to the hospital,” Joreen continued.

“I brought my daughter to Thomson Medical on the same day.”

Right now, however, Joreen is fixated with only one thing: finding out the exact cause of the incident.

“My daughter is traumatised and all she could tell me was that she rolled down the stairs,” she said.

Investigations are completed

Over on SBS Transit’s side, investigations into the incident have been completed, and a spokesman for the bus company issued an apology to the victims.

“We are sorry to hear about the incident and hope that both her mother-in-law and daughter are feeling better,” said Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications.

“We have completed our investigations into the incident which include viewing the CCTV footage.

“We note that the bus was stationary at the alighting berth when her mother-in-law and daughter, who were seated on the upper deck, got up to make their way towards the stairs.

“By the time they got to the top of the stairs, the last passenger on the lower deck had already alighted.

“The bus captain was not aware of anyone else wanting to alight and he proceeded to close the doors and slowly moved off.

“Unfortunately, both her mother-in-law and daughter who were making their way down the stairs at this point, lost their balance and fell.

“Our bus captain immediately stopped the bus to check on them when this happened.

“An interchange staff also came on board to attend to them and he offered to call for an ambulance which her mother-in-law declined.

“We wish the mother-in-law and daughter a speedy recovery.”

Netizens disagree

While one’s immediate reaction would be to empathise with the victims and condemn the driver (as some undoubtedly would)…

A few Netizens found themselves pointing the finger, not at the bus captain…

…but the victims.

Though to be fair, some attributed the blame equally.

What do you think though?

Seeing how both parties seem to have drawn quite a flak…

What do you think of this whole… fiasco?

Moral of the story is this: when everyone’s alighting, just go with the flow. Or do what my colleague always does: make loud noises like coughing or stomping loudly (I’ve no idea why he’s so experienced). The driver would definitely know someone’s still in.
