A Greek woman has filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years after ChatGPT allegedly “predicted” he was having an affair through an unusual application of the AI tool – reading coffee grounds in his cup.

AI-powered Coffee Cup Reading Leads to Marital Breakdown

The unnamed mother-of-two took the unconventional step of uploading photographs of both her and her husband’s coffee cups to ChatGPT.

The AI chatbot reportedly “interpreted” the coffee grounds to suggest her husband was thinking about or already engaged in an extramarital affair with a woman whose name began with the letter E.

After receiving this “reading,” the woman immediately asked her husband to leave their home, informed their children about the impending divorce, and contacted a lawyer to begin legal proceedings.

“I laughed it off as nonsense but she took it seriously,” the husband said during an appearance on Greek morning show To Proino. “She asked me to leave, told our kids we were getting divorced, and then I got a call from a lawyer. That’s when I realised this wasn’t just a phase.”

The husband noted this wasn’t the first time his wife had been influenced by supernatural guidance. “A few years ago, she visited an astrologer and it took her a whole year to accept that none of it was real,” he explained on the morning program.

Despite the husband’s refusal to agree to a mutual separation, he was formally served with divorce papers just three days after the coffee cup reading incident.

Traditional Fortune-Telling Meets Modern Technology

Tasseography, or coffee ground reading, is a traditional form of divination practiced for centuries. The practice originated in Turkey and can be traced back to the 16th century during the rule of Sultan Suleinan.

Greeks traditionally believe that a person’s emotional, mental, and physical condition can affect the shape of their coffee residue, creating patterns that supposedly reveal information about their life and future.

The husband’s lawyer, Pheobus Stroungaris, maintains that his client is “innocent until proven guilty” and plans to file for custody of the children.

“The absurdity of artificial intelligence cannot be relied upon in a court of law,” Stroungaris stated.

Several experienced coffee readers have weighed in on the viral story, pointing out that authentic tasseography doesn’t base readings solely on coffee grounds but also analyzes the foam and the coffee saucer.

The incident has sparked discussions online, with some social media users joking that AI is now “taking psychic jobs” while others expressed concern about how digital tools might be affecting vulnerable individuals’ grasp on reality.

“I genuinely feel like we’re gonna see a huge wave of people for whom LLM (Large Language Model) tools have just utterly annihilated their ability to comprehend reality,” wrote one Reddit user in response to the story.

ChatGPT, developed as a text-based AI assistant, has no actual fortune-telling capabilities and is not designed to interpret images of coffee grounds or other divination methods.
