Have you ever noticed that ladies’ shirts have buttons on the right and men’s have them on the left?
Confused? Here, take a look at a lady’s shirt.
Notice that the buttons are on the right of the shirt, with the holes on the left?
Now, take a look at a guy’s shirt.
The orientation of the buttons is changed.
Still don’t believe me? Just check out any shirts you have.
This is actually a simple trick to finding out your clothes’ gender when all the clothing items are mixed up during the sales season.
Are you scratching your head now, trying to come up with a logical reason why the buttons have to be on the different side? Itching to know the answer?
The logic is actually very simple. Even though it is not fully proved historically or scientifically, many sources explained that it is because men used to dress themselves and women used to be dressed by others. In the Victorian era, most of the men dressed themselves, even if they were of the upper classes.
However, women of the middle and upper classes needed help to dress themselves even for the simplest occasion. This is because the Victorian fashion required females to have layers after layers of clothing, from corsets to petticoats to finally the gown.

Since most people were known to be right-handed, clothes makers naturally designed buttons to be on the left at first.
This was no problem to men who dressed themselves but for servants and maids helping their mistresses to dress up, it was uncomfortable and more difficult to button up for others.
Thus, the clothes makers eventually realised it would be better for ladies’ clothing to have buttons on the left to make dressing up easier.
Now, you wonder, since everybody dresses themselves these days (seriously, I hope so!), why don’t we just have a universal agreement to put buttons on the left?
Well, I would just say this is a custom and tradition passed down so long that everybody just follows.
Besides, nobody really cares about where the buttons are or even notice the difference for a long time.
Or maybe it’s for the very first reason I’ve provided: for you to grab the correct shirt during a sale.
