Much like a free gift and a cup of bubble tea, a long weekend never fails to put a smile on a Singaporean’s face.
Working from home has been particularly hard on us during the COVID-19 pandemic, what with all the Netflix shows to watch and procrastination we have to engage in.
Fortunately for us, Singapore has many public holidays to celebrate the various festivals of different cultures in our multiracial society.
And due to a change in dates, there’ll be an extra long weekend next year.
Hari Raya Public Holidays in Singapore for 2022 Will Be Pushed One Day Later
The dates for the Hari Raya public holidays in 2022 have been changed, and will fall later than previously announced.
Back in April, it was announced that Hari Raya Puasa will fall on 2 May 2022 and Hari Raya Haji on 9 July 2022.
As you know, Hari Raya Puasa celebrates the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, while Hari Raya Haji commemorates the end of the haj, the holy pilgrimage to Mecca.
However, due to astronomical calculations with revised criteria, the dates have now been pushed forward by one day.
This means that Hari Raya Puasa will fall on 3 May 2022 and Hari Raya Haji on 10 July 2022.
As the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) explained: “The highest Islamic authorities of Brunei Darussalam, Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia and Republic of Singapore have agreed to adopt revised criteria of the astronomical calculation for the determination of the Islamic calendar from year 2022.
“The agreement was reached among member countries after new findings emerged over years of research.”
Consequently, other important dates in the Islamic calendar will be changed, including the start of the Muslim new year and the fasting month.
Six Long Weekends in 2022
Since Hari Raya Haji falls on 10 July, a Sunday, the following Monday will be a public holiday as well. This means that there’ll be a total of six long weekends next year, which couldn’t have come at a better time, what with all our Vaccinated Travel Lane agreements.
In addition to Hari Raya Haji, three other public holidays fall on a Sunday, namely:
- Labour Day (1 May)
- Vesak Day (15 May)
- Christmas Day (25 Dec)
Deepavali (24 Oct) falls on a Monday, while Good Friday (15 Apr) falls on a Friday.
The other public holidays for 2022 are:
- New Year’s Day (1 Jan)
- Chinese New Year (1 Feb and 2 Feb)
- Hari Raya Haji (9 Jul)
- National Day (9 Aug)
Let’s hope that we’ll be able to spend these long weekends in a foreign land and not at home watching Squid Game for the 42nd time.
