For many people who get into accidents, staying alive isn’t the only thing they have to worry about.
First comes the anxiety and uncertainty over whether their loved one will survive the crash.
Then, even when they do, after the high of getting saved from the brink, large hospital bills can send families into another bout of mental distress.
And when that happens, they need help from the community.
31YO Hawker From M’sia In Coma After Accident in Mandai
On the night of 20 March, Mr Lau was travelling back home on his motorbike after leaving his workplace in Choa Chu Kang.
The 31-year-old Malaysian works as a cai fan hawker there.
On his way home, Mr Lau got into an accident at the intersection of Mandai and Woodlands Road at around 10.17pm.
The hawker sustained several severe injuries as a result, including a blood clot in the brain, collapsed lungs, and fractures to his pelvis, nose, face, and limbs.
Mr Lau was rushed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) where he had to undergo 6 surgeries over the course of 10 hours.
Fortunately, despite the severity of his injuries, doctors managed to save Mr Lau’s life.
The Malaysian is still in a coma, though, and it’s uncertain when he’ll come to.
But that’s not the only thing Mr Lau’s family is fretting over.
Family Seeks Donation As Medical Bills Exceed $99k
Due to the extent of his injuries and the treatment required, the hawker racked up an inordinately large hospital bill.
After five days in the hospital, Mr Lau’s bills are estimated to amount to $99,641.
Given that he’s in a coma, this amount will only rise.
Understandably, Mr Lau’s family needs some help paying the bills and have launched a donation drive hoping to get some help from the community.
The figure of $99,641 is nowhere close to the figure the family expect to pay, however, as they have listed a goal of $300,000.
At the time of writing, the family has managed to raise more than S$122,000, donated by 1,338 kind souls.
As stated on their crowdfunding page, all proceeds will go to SG Accident Help Centre, which will help the family defray the costs of their medical bills.
If you’re saddened by Mr Lau’s story and wish to make a donation to help the family out, you can head here to do so.
As the family said: “We seek your help for the payment of his medical expenses, and we would greatly appreciate it if you donated any amount of money – no matter how small, every cent makes a difference.”
