Yes, it’s that annoying time of the year again. The haze is coming back to haunt us and our poor nostrils. Sunny skies are going to be smothered by microscopic burnt tree remnants, and you’ll be hearing a lot of curses along the day. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to the pesky haze.
PSI Readings – How to Follow Them
There’s two types of PSI readings. The first is the 24-hour read, while the other is taken every 3-hours. If I were you, I’d stick to following the 3-hour PSI reading, as it gives more recent update. You’ll be able to know if it’s safe enough to step out of the apartment or just sit inside and watch Orange is the New Black.
Two Things You Must Have
Eye drops will help you keep your eyes hydrated, especially if your eyes tend to dry up easily. We also know how face masks sell like hot cakes this time of the year, but yes, it works wonders!
Now, About Masks
The first thing we grab to buy at the sight of the haze is a mask. But not all masks are the same. Did you know that the surgical masks don’t really provide adequate protection against the haze?
You’d be better off spending a few more cents and investing in an N95 mask. It’s been proven (scientifically, no less!) to keep microscopic particles out of your nose and mouth. You can use it again and again, as long as it’s in the same shape.
The Haze Situation – How Long Has It Been Around?
Brace yourself for the answer – 16 years! And yes, it’s been a recurring problem too. Singapore is hit like clockwork almost every from June right up to October.
Picking Out an Air Purifier
Now here’s another item that’s going to fly off of the shelves. Some purifiers come with a note on the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). Look out for the one that’s got a smoke CADR, as it’s the best one to use during the haze.
Ideally, the smoke CADR must be a minimum of 3x the room’s volume in the cubic metre. The bigger the CADR number, the faster it cleans your room.
If you’re thinking of getting an air purifier without a CADR rating, be sure to see that the manufacturer backs up the product with its ability to clean minute particles. You might not be getting the right air purifier otherwise to use during this hazy time.
