Yes 933 radio DJ Hazelle Teo, 31, announced her engagement to James Wong, a 24-year-old pianist and content creator based in Singapore.
The couple shared the news on Instagram on 6 Jun through a joint post.

Here’s how the proposal occurred.
The Proposal
The proposal took place on the final day of Teo’s week-long work trip in Qingdao, China, at her hotel. Teo had returned to her hotel at 1am and expected just five hours of rest before catching a 6am flight back to Singapore.
A staff member from travel company Chan Brothers approached Teo at the hotel lobby. The staff member told her the hotel was offering a room upgrade after recognising her as a radio DJ. She only needed to go to the room, film a video and tag the hotel on Instagram to redeem it.
Teo felt hesitant because of the late hour and her exhaustion. She had to wake up in five hours to catch her flight home. However, she proceeded to the top floor with her co-host Qijia, not knowing that Qijia was helping Wong orchestrate the surprise.
When Teo entered the room, she saw a videographer standing inside with a camera facing her. She initially thought the hotel had sent someone to film DJs’ reactions for marketing purposes.
This made her angry as she felt the hotel was invading her privacy.
The room door opened further to reveal a soft orange glow from inside. Flower petals and candles decorated the space. Wong stood waiting inside the beautifully arranged room.
Wong had gone to great lengths to keep his presence in China secret. He turned off his location services and told Teo that his Find My feature was not working. He extended their stay in China and contacted Teo’s manager to arrange for her to have a month-long leave. Wong also packed extra clothes for her for the extended trip.

Teo’s criteria for the proposal included it being private and having her good friend and photographer, Wei Jie, present but hidden somewhere. Wong flew Wei Jie out specifically for the proposal.
The day after the proposal, the three of them visited popular spots around Qingdao for a photo shoot. After Wei Jie returned home, Teo and Wong hired a makeup team and photographer from China to capture more pictures. Teo bought a dress from the night market in Qingdao for the spontaneous engagement shoot.
“This feels so right. We feel so right. The rest of our lives feels so right. We’re so excited to begin this new chapter together, and thank you for sharing in our joy,” the newly engaged couple wrote in their Instagram post.
How Hazelle Teo and James Wong Met Through Instagram Collaboration
Teo and Wong have been dating for more than a year. They first met in 2024 when Wong appeared on Teo’s Instagram explore page.
Yes, it turns out that you can, indeed, find true love from Instagram.

Interestingly, Teo made the first move in their relationship, which she described as not being the typical scenario of a guy chasing after a girl.
Teo reached out to Wong to see if he wanted to collaborate on a project. She suggested they work on a Taylor Swift song where she would sing and he would play the piano. Wong agreed to the collaboration.
Teo used this work opportunity to ask for Wong’s handle on messaging platform Telegram for easier communication. She attempted to engage him in more personal conversations through the app. Wong only replied to work-related messages and ignored personal topics.
When Wong did respond to personal messages, he would reply after approximately 14 hours with responses like “haha” or “okay” that made it difficult for Teo to continue the conversation.
The turning point came when Teo asked Wong out for supper one day. They spoke for three solid hours that night, covering many topics. After that evening, Wong became more responsive on Telegram and the dynamics between them shifted.

The couple met each other’s parents within three months of dating. Teo’s parents developed a strong fondness for Wong, praising his politeness and kindness. They noted how well he treats both Teo’s parents and his own parents.
Teo expressed her admiration for Wong’s ambition and drive. As fellow content creators, Wong has provided Teo with numerous social media content ideas that have helped her gain more followers. They enjoy collaborating as a team and supporting each other’s creative endeavours.
The couple had one public moment before their engagement announcement at Hong Kong singer-songwriter GEM’s concert in March. The kiss camera captured them on screen in front of 50,000 people. Teo received numerous texts immediately after their appearance, including one from her boss.
Wedding Plans and Future Goals for Engaged Couple Hazelle Teo and James Wong
Teo has expressed her preference for a very private wedding celebration. Having hosted many different weddings through her work, she wants to avoid becoming what she calls a “bride-zilla.” She envisions a super chill and cool wedding, jokingly mentioning the possibility of having a Milo cart for friends and family.
The celebration would focus on close friends and family members who love and support the couple. Teo wants the day to centre on coming together and celebrating their relationship rather than hosting an over-the-top event that would tire her out.
Teo admitted she has always dated older men in the past, so she never considered that a relationship with a younger man could work for her. Her relationship with Wong has received significant support from her family and fellow Mediacorp artiste friends.

Close friends including Tay Ying, Tay Ying’s husband, Kayly, and Denise (Camilia Tan) repeatedly told Teo that James treats her well and is right for her. These comments helped reaffirm her life choices and made her want to cherish the relationship more.
Teo has expressed her desire to start a family and have children. She hopes to have four kids but acknowledges this will likely happen after the wedding. The couple plans to focus on completing their current commitments, building their foundation together, and spending more alone time before expanding their family.
The radio DJ chose not to make her relationship with Wong public until their engagement announcement. Her previous relationship became awkward when listeners approached her asking about her former partner after they broke up. She decided her next relationship would only be announced after getting engaged.
Moving forward, Teo and Wong have created a couple account on social media platform. They plan to focus on making couple-centred content together. The account is ready but has not yet been made public.
Both being content creators, they find many interesting moments in their daily lives that would be fun and engaging for followers. They view this as both entertainment for their audience and a way of working together as a married couple.
