More and more people are now investing more time and money in the “look” of their HDB flat. They enlist the expertise of interior designers, who sit down with homeowners to understand what they are looking for.
Most of these designs are focused on making the place look more spacious. This is often done through the addition of mirrors in certain spaces and painting the walls in light colours. Other ways to do this include having light-coloured floor tiles, moving furniture away from walls and leaving windows uncovered to give the room an illusion of depth.
Another feature is the “en suite bathroom”, with only a glass door separating the bedroom and bathroom. This is found in many boutique hotels. One homeowner (who unsurprisingly, works as a designer) also included room numbers on each bedroom door in his house, to truly reinforce the “hotel design”.
Each bedrooms in his Tampines home has a specific theme. The master bedroom has a clean, minimalist style, while his daughter’s room is painted pink and filled with toys and children’s furnishings. The spare bedroom is designed according to an industrial theme, with grey walls, dim lighting and switches in the vintage style. He has even won several international design awards for his home’s design.
Some homeowners have also gone for the “hipster cafe” design, which includes exposed brick walls, fake grass and vintage furniture (and yes, even vintage phones are part of the package).
However, home interior design packages for HDB flats do not come cheap. Be prepared to fork out a huge amount of money. But if you like the “posh posh” look and want your living space to stand out from the rest, this can be something you “treat” yourself to. Perhaps in a clean, well-designed living space with the “vibe” you like, will you truly find a place where you can unwind, relax and spend time with your loved ones.
