HDB Staff Member, 49, Dies After Dragon Boat Race at 2025 Singapore Regatta Waterfest

A 49-year-old Housing and Development Board staff member died on 16 Nov 2025 after participating in a dragon boat race at the 2025 Singapore Regatta Waterfest.

The man represented the HDB dragon boat team and competed in the morning race at the Singapore Sports Hub’s Water Sports Centre at Kallang Basin.

The HDB employee reported feeling unwell following the race. Immediate medical assistance was provided on-site by organisers.

His condition did not improve despite receiving medical attention at the scene. He was then transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for further treatment.

The man was admitted to the hospital unconscious. He later passed on after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts by the emergency crew.

Police Investigation and Support for Grieving Family

The police were alerted to a case of unnatural death at around 12:20pm. The man was subsequently pronounced dead at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected. Investigations are ongoing.

HDB said it was deeply saddened by the death. The organisation is in close contact with the deceased’s family and providing them with fullest support and assistance during this difficult time.

HDB’s thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues who are grieving this sudden loss.

Kallang Alive Sport Management, which runs the Singapore Sports Hub, and the Singapore Dragon Boat Association issued a joint statement expressing their sadness. They said they are working closely with relevant authorities to provide further assistance if needed.

The organisers stated their thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

The annual Singapore Regatta Waterfest took place from Friday to Sunday. The event is one of the country’s biggest dragon boating events, with almost 4,000 participants competing across 25 categories this year.
