If you woke up today morning and discovered that you’re about two hours late for work, don’t fret, you’re not the only one.

The heavy morning rains lulled us into our deepest slumber for 2021, allowing us to momentarily forget the fact that we still can’t travel.

It’s also made the weather comfortably cool, with a low of 24°C.

While we’re certainly thankful for the weather, after some scorchingly hot days, heavy downpours in a city can cause all sorts of problems.

Heavy Rain This Morning Led to Several Flash Floods

This morning’s (20 Aug) downpour was so heavy that it prompted the authorities to issue a warning to residents to avoid certain areas with flood risk.

Earlier in the day, PUB warned on Facebook that heavy rain is expected in the northern, eastern, and central areas of the country from 7:30 am to 8:15 am.

Just two hours later, they said that flash floods had occurred at slip roads along Pasir Ris Drive 12 and Tampines Avenue 10.

Soon, videos of the flooded junction made their way online.

As you can see, it looks the vehicles are taking a bath.

Stuck in the 1m-deep pool of water, these vehicles seem unable to move and have reportedly caused a massive traffic jam.

Motorist & Passengers From 13 Vehicles At Pasir Ris Junction

The situation got so bad that the Singapore Civil Defence Force had to intervene and evacuate people from the flooded junction.

Officers evacuated motorists and passengers from 13 partially submerged vehicles stuck in the 1m-deep waters, and are assessing two people for injuries.

One person was seen being taken away on a gurney by SCDF personnel, as other motorists are stuck in a massive jam.

SCDF said it received a call for assistance at around 7:40 am this morning.

Some Water Levels in Drains & Canals Reached 90%

Just an hour later, PUB said water levels in drains and canals reached 90% in some parts of Singapore due to the downpour.

The agency advised residents to avoid the following areas for the next hour as they were at risk of flash floods:

  • Siang Kuang Avenue (Unit 35)
  • Upper Paya Lebar Road
  • Lorong Gambir/Gambir Walk
  • Puay Hee Avenue/Siak Kew Avenue
  • Lorong 2 Toa Payoh (Blk 122)
  • Langsat Road/Lorong 105 Changi
  • MacPherson Road/Playfair Road
  • Mount Vernon Road
  • Playfair Road OD (Bartley Road East)
  • Jalan Lokam/Upper Paya Lebar Road
