If you’ve not heard of Bai Tai Sui (拜太岁) and didn’t know what it entails, it’s understandable: in the day and age when youngsters live for the gram, certain traditions are starting to lose its hold.

But if you’ve heard of it, or simply think that it’s about time you know more about it, then here’s what Bai Tai Sui is.

Tai Sui (太岁) are the stars that are directly opposite the planet Jupiter, and they personified as deities in Chinese astrology.

The deities are in charge of people’s fortune. Every year, there would be several Chinese zodiac signs that would be in conflict with Tai Sui, which we’ll refer to as “犯太岁”.

These people would have unstable luck the entire year, so in order to counter the bad luck, they’ll have to worship the Tai Sui deities (拜太岁). In Singapore, they can go to various templates to Bai Tai Sui.

So, for the year of the pig, which Chinese zodiac signs would need to Bai Tai Sui?

Pig
(Year of birth: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007)

There’s no doubt about this: if your Chinese zodiac sign is in the same year, you’d definitely need to Bai Tai Sui.

Monkey
(Year of birth: 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016)

In the year of the pig, Monkey would harm Tai Sui (害太岁), so they might be on bad terms with people or framed by others.

Tiger
(Year of birth: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010)

Tiger people would “destroy Tai Sui” (破太岁), so they might lose several important things. Therefore, they should try to avoid conflict so as to prevent any loss.

Snake
(Year of Birth: 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013)

People born in the year of the Snake will have a conflict with Tai Sui, so things might not go well for them. They’re advised to handle every relationship carefully.

Now, for people who 犯太岁, it’s advised that you also do all these this year:

  • Attend more joyous celebrations (e.g. weddings) to rub some positive energies from happy people
  • Avoid going to funerals or hospital
  • Go for wisdom tooth extraction or blood donation so as to overcome 血光之灾
  • Do good
  • Avoid loud construction work as Tai Sui don’t like noise and commotion

Now, all these are, admittedly, superstitious, so don’t cast everything in stone.

Instead, here’s one proven (based on a study) way to ensure that you’ll have a great year of the Pig (even if you don’t 犯太岁): Set SMART goals.

SMART refers to

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

For example, if you want to lose weight, don’t just set a vaguely worded goal like “I want to lose weight in the year of the Pig.” Instead, write “I weigh 50kg on 31 October 2019,” and look at that goal every day (if possible, rewrite it daily even if it’ the same sentence).

You’ll surprisingly achieve your goal by 31 October 2019, whether you 犯太岁 or not, because every successful person has a similar habit: they set a SMART goal.
