Theft cases have been on the rise in Singapore. I never knew the day would come when I would have to think twice about things being stolen. No, the thought never even crossed my mind once in the past 7 years.
Things are changing for the worse, though, and in addition to hoping that authorities are able to stomp crime rates back to the ground, we must also do our own parts to prevent crimes–by not giving criminals even more easy targets.
A few cars parked around Chinatown and Marina Bay Sands were allegedly broken into, and all in the same day. The owners who went to see their vehicles found their windscreens smashed and in a mess. The Marina Bay incident apparently happened near The Shoppes, where the open carpark area is located.
A post on the Singapore Taxi Driver’s Facebook page had a number of photos showing four damaged cars linked to the car break-ins. One of the cars was a taxi. I mean, come on. Aren’t even taxis spared?
All breakages were done in the same way. The windscreens were smashed at the bottom, right-hand corner.
The post was uploaded by Jil Khoo, who said that the incident took place on the 29th of April. Everything valuable was lost from the cars. Not just the cash cards, but identity cards and passports too.
The second incident was uploaded on the same Facebook page by another user, an Alaric Teo.
This time, a taxi was hit in the exact same way but in a different location. It was Chinatown that got hit the second time round. It really stamps the fact that the two incidents are related and done by the same people.
According to Alaric, the taxi which was broken into was located at one of the multi-storied carparks of the famous Chinese shopping area. Both posts have gone viral, and naturally all of us are concerned about our safety. How could such a brazen attack happen right under our noses?
For the time being, I’d urge you be cautious when you go to these two places or any other venue for that matter. Don’t keep your valuable items in the car. You don’t want to lose your laptop, ICs or passports. It’s your data that’s at stake. You might end up becoming a victim of identity theft after all.
Now that’s one way to really ruin your day. So be safe, and don’t park your car at secluded areas too.
