The average adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep at night in order to function like a normal human being. Some claim they get by just fine with less than 5 hours but before you brag about how superhuman you are, continue reading this article.

The researchers of UK’s Royal Society for Public Health found that after participants has gone 17 hours without sleep, their results are similar to someone with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.05 percent, which is considered legally ‘impaired’. Shockingly, going 24 hours without sleep will result in the same alertness of a drunk person with 0.1 percent BAC which is enough to put you on the legally drunk scale!

So besides being considered a drunk because of lack of sleep, not getting enough snooze time can also make you gain more weight. This is because failing to get 7 to 8 hours of recommended sleep time a day increases the production of the hunger hormone in the body called ghrelin. So if you constantly find yourself seeking out for food or wanting to snack all the time, that’s probably a symptom of sleep deprivation.

Our entire body and especially our brain can only do so much. Exhausting and overworking it would definitely cause it to malfunction, not literally but studies found that lack of sleep causes a person’s focus and also creativity to decrease tremendously. Not only that, but it can also lead to memory loss!

I know some people whose motto are, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” which is confusing to me because who doesn’t love sleep?! Well, I guess its good news for them because studies have found that lack of sleep can in fact cause death. Those who get very little sleep have a higher mortality rate compared to people who have adequate and regular sleep patterns. Besides that, you’re at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease if you don’t get sufficient sleep.

Not only that, lack of sleep is also evil because it actually makes us less empathic towards others. Our brain is exhausted and is having a hard time focusing and thinking straight. That’s why we’re so grumpy, insensitive and irritable even over the little things when we’re sleep deprived. People who are sleep deprived are also known to pick fights which is really not nice.

The world is already scary enough as it is, so make it a better place by getting enough sleep every night, okay?
