What if, one day, you turn on the tap expecting clear, (somewhat) delicious water and it turns out like this?
Run around screaming your head off? Take a thousand and one pictures and spread on WhatsApp?
Or maybe, post it on Facebook and accuse PUB of “eating” taxpayer’s money and not doing their job.
The latter might sound far-fetched but it has happened before.
Yes, right here in Singapore.
Ang Mo Kio HDB Flat Experienced Brown Water Running Out From Tap
Back in June 2018, Facebook user Ukyo Tachibana uploaded a video on Facebook.
He claimed that he was giving his son a bath from the common toilet. But instead of clear water, he got “fresh, rusty water” instead.
He contacted PUB about the issue and they said they promised to send people to his home to check.
One hour before the PUB officers arrived, he received a call from PUB, informing him that the case has been handed over to Ang Mo Kio Town Council.
He claimed that Ang Mo Kio Town Council didn’t even contact him, and he had to wait two days before the problem could be fixed.
PUB: It’s a Common Occurrence.
PUB has since issued a statement to queries regarding the incident.
They said that they’ve conducted a valve operation that afternoon, which caused a “resuspension of mineral sediments in the pipeline”.
As a result, some of their customers might’ve experienced a temporary discolouration of water from their taps.
They advised customers who meet with the same problem to just let the water run from the tap until it clears.
So, problem solved. Right?
Okay, before you start thinking PUB has lied, they’re right. The problem could be solved by letting the water run from the taps.
But that’s not the best solution. Here’s why
The price of water in Singapore has increased
In case you’re unaware, the price of water in Singapore has increased since 1 Jul 2018.
According to the Finance Minister, the price of water has to be increased to reflect the latest cost of supply water to Singaporeans.
This initiative is done in hopes to deter water wastage. In other words, words cannot work, right? Neh mind, I’ll hit you where it hurts the most. Your wallet.
Which is why you shouldn’t let the water run from your tap by yourself
Which means that if you’re going to let the water run out of every tap in the house, plus periodic flushes of your toilet bowl, it’s going to cost you money.
Here’s what you should do instead.
Call your town council or PUB, tell them the issue and get them to send people down to your house.
And wait for them to come to your house and solve the problem.
Because when their people are at your house, it’s highly likely that they’ll turn off the water meter before running your taps and flush your toilet.
