Hero Who Saved Man at Jurong Lake Gardens Passed Away in a Recent Fatal Accident

Back in May, a man who was cycling at Jurong Lake Gardens suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed.

Luckily, two lifeguards who were on duty at the Jurong Lake Gardens Swimming Complex at that time, Mr Tang Jie and Mr Leong Wai Kit, were alerted by a nearby passerby about the situation and they quickly rushed to assist the man.

An unknown good samaritan who was passing by the area also stopped to render his assistance. The three of them performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the victim until paramedics arrived to take over.

Thanks to their quick actions and help, the man was successfully revived at the scene.

While the two lifeguards were identified, the good Samaritan wasn’t.

As such, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) decided to award the two lifeguards for their bravery first on 13 September, and in the meantime, continue their search for the good Samaritan by sharing this incident in a Facebook post on 18 September.

After the post was uploaded, friends of the unknown good Samaritan started commenting and saying that the person was actually Mohamed Shariff, a 30-year-old SCDF firefighter based at the Tuas Fire Station.

However, they also revealed that Shariff had unfortunately met with a fatal car accident along Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) just days before the post was uploaded, on 14 September.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, Shariff’s motorcycle collided with a container truck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other than Shariff, the fatal accident also involved a container truck, a lorry, and an SCDF ambulance.

SCDF Expresses Regret Over Shariff’s Passing

It was reported that Shariff was not on duty when he witnessed the incident at Jurong Lake Gardens back in May. Despite this, he was prompt to offer his assistance to a fellow citizen in need.

SCDF confirmed his identity in their Facebook post and expressed that it was heartening to know that their officers were always quick to render their help regardless of whether they were on or off-duty.

They also thanked Shariff’s friends for identifying the good Samaritan in the Jurong Lake Gardens incident and expressed their regret over his passing.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Shariff, may he rest in peace.
