The Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to infecting humans and killing businesses, has left many mosquitoes feeling neglected.
Mosquitoes: Everyone’s forgotten about us. It’s like we don’t even exist anymore.
But the dengue virus is still very much alive, and attention-seeking mosquitoes may not be the only culprits this time.
Someone Hid Containers in Hougang Trees That Led to Mosquitoes Breeding
Mosquitoes were found breeding in several containers “hidden” in trees at a park in Hougang, said Member of Parliament for Hougang Png Eng Huat.
In a Facebook post, Mr Png said that the receptacles were “planted in the trees along the footpath in the park between Blk 341 and Blk 351 Hougang Ave 7”.
Mr Png said that some of these containers were “well hidden”, suggesting that they were intentionally placed in positions where it would be hard to spot.
“Some containers were well hidden, making the job of the property team difficult when they go on a ‘search and destroy’ run.”
But why would someone place these containers in trees for mosquitoes to breed?
Oh right, I forgot about that.
Called Upon Residents To Help Catch The Perpetrator
The Workers’ Party MP called upon residents to aid them in their search for the perpetrator.
“We are asking residents living in the two blocks of flats overlooking the park to help us keep an eye on the activities there, and to report to the town council if they do spot something suspicious.”

“We intend to catch the perpetrator because the health of our residents matters,” said Mr Png.
Mr Png also said that while we’re busy combating Covid-19, we should “not forget to keep dengue at bay too.”
Dengue Cases Expected to Exceed Last Year’s Tally
Last month, the National Environmental Agency (NEA) warned residents that the number of dengue cases in 2020 could exceed the 16,000 Cases we had last year if we don’t take the necessary precautions.
The number of cases in the week ending May 23 was 623, the highest so far this year, according to CNA.
So, what can we do?
5-Step Mozzie Wipeout
Mosquitoes love getting it on with each other, and the more they get it on, the more babies they’ll have to infect us.
This means we’ll need to kill the mood, and there’s no better way to do this than the ‘5-step Mozzie Wipeout’.
While it sounds like a dance move from the 70s, it’s actually a 5-step plan to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
Here are some other preventive measures that you can take to prevent breeding:
- Cover floor traps and toilet bowls
- Seal off overflow pipes of flushing cisterns
- Add sand granular insecticide to places where mosquitoes could breed and where stagnant water cannot be removed
- Turn over all water containers and wipe the rims dry
- Ask a relative or friend to check your home regularly for stagnant water if you’re abroad
We’re already struggling with one virus. Let’s not make it easy for these neglected mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes: Damn you, Covid-19.
