Holidaying around the world doesn’t make you a better person despite what people say

Nowadays it seems like backpacking and travelling around the world has become a must among youths. They conclude that they will ‘find’ themselves or become a better person after travelling. But how true is that? Here’s our take on why holidaying around the world doesn’t make you a better person.

You’re just having fun
You don’t learn anything about yourself or find yourself when you’re just having fun. Who wants to pay to get into hardships?

Spending your parents’ money
Let’s face it: we’re not saying all, but most of us who travel are sponsored by our parents, at least in part. Your part time job can only get you so far after all. Forget travelling the world, you’ll need help just travelling to a destination. Explain to me how that is going to make you more independent again?

Draining your savings even if you have some
Continuing on from the previous point, there are some who manage to travel with their own savings. Well, if you decide to do so, you’ll kiss your savings goodbye and think that your future self can handle things in the future. That’s not improving, that’s worse than what you’ve been doing until now.

You don’t learn
Or at least, not in the way your future potential employer value. Did you gain a valuable business partner through holidaying round the world or did you manage to come back with superb work experience? Unless they’re looking to expand into the region you’ve travelled to, and you demonstrate an excellent understanding of the place, chances are you’re the same as any other fresh grads out there. And even then, it’s cheaper to hire a local in that particular country anyway.

Thinking of where to go next
You’re just constantly thinking of where to head next instead of finding solutions to important questions: You don’t think of building a career for yourself, learning new skills or how to provide for your parents when they retire; not when you’re on your vacation.

It sounds bad to an employer
Your employer’s want to know what you have been doing for the past one year after you graduated. If your reply is “holidaying around the world,” chances are he or she is not going to applaud you for it.

Not everyone who travels gain valuable life lessons
If you’re just travelling, switching between hostels, finding food, you’re just gaining experience. Yes, you become more independent, but honestly, guys become more independent in the army anyway. It doesn’t help much when it comes to finding jobs, does it?

You don’t contribute to anything
You don’t contribute to anything except the tourism sector. Of another country.

Your purpose of travelling is just to escape the real life
You just want a temporary OUT from your life. It’s a break from what could be a long, monotonous work life. It’s not to find yourself, it’s to lose yourself. #harshtruth
