What does Lunar New Year have to do with black pepper?
Is it an ingredient in a traditional recipe uncovered only once a year to commemorate the occasion? Is it a symbol of wealth to be displayed and revered for good fortune in the year ahead? Is it traditionally found in China or the other places celebrating the festival?
Absolutely not.
Some executive in an American fast food company simply decided that black pepper beef would be the representative dish of the festival. After all, it is a dish clearly and inextricably associated with the occasion unlike the likes of yusheng, and the lucky colour of black can only mean prosperity and success in Chinese culture.
It’s one of the more expensive burgers on the menu but probably costs what, $2 to make?
And we buy it every year, rushing to McDonald’s in hordes for the pseudo-cultural burger until the capitalists withdraw their bait and we retreat to our homes in disappointment.
That is, until a Malaysian man created his own recipe for the burger to be made without dependence on McDonald’s. Seize the means of production, as they say.
Man Shared Popular Prosperity Burger Recipe Since 2020; Now Everyone’s Loving It with 64K Shares
The recipe was first created in May 2020 (when he was bored during lockdown?) by Facebook user Mohd Faiz Fitri Iberahim, and has since been shared 64,000 times.
You can have the full recipe below, courtesy of Mothership. The ingredients are:
- Burger buns (preferably better than dry McDonald’s sesame buns)
- Minced beef (that you know isn’t from questionable sources, unlike… )
- Diced and sliced onions (for your Valentine)
- Water (preferably not from your eyes as you chop the onions)
- Flour
- Ground black pepper
- Butter
- Oyster sauce and sweet soy sauce
- Salt (from McDonald’s now that they can’t cheat you anymore)
After you’ve gathered said ingredients, here’s what you need to do:
- Spread butter on the bread, and fry it in a pan for that crispy goodness.
- Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape them into ellipsoids to fit the shape of the bread.
3. Grill the patties (or pan-fry them) until they are cooked. Or medium rare. Whatever floats your boat.
4. Heat the butter and thicken it with flour, stirring until the colour changes.
5. Continue stirring while adding the glass of water, diced onions, and the rest of the condiments; leave simmering to thicken.
6. Coat the patties in the sauce, and assemble the burger with the bun, sliced onions, and the patty (or patties, if you prefer)
7. Marvel at the finished product and pat yourself on the back. McDonald’s will go out of business at this rate.
