A while back, I was having a casual argument with my friend from Malaysia, Tau Kwa.
“YOU THINK YOU MALAYSIA YOU BIG IS IT?” I remember saying in a really chill tone. “WE GOT MERLION WHAT DO YOU HAVE?”
“YOU SINKIE GO BACK HOME LAH,” he replied with a kind smile. “ALWAYS LEECHING OFF OUR WATER, YOU LEECH.”
“WE GOT MCDONALD’S NASI LEMAK BURGER FIRST.”
“WE GOT KFC SALTED EGG CHICKEN FIRST.”
Breathing really heavily, we then looked at each other square in the eye.
“WE’RE TIED FOR STRONGEST PASSPORT IN THE WORLD.”
“WE’VE GOT HONESTBEE.”
It was then that I knew.
We’ve lost.
Life without honestbee?
What’s that?
And then the revelation dropped.
honestbee Will Also Suspend Its Operations in M’sia
Apparently, honestbee’s suspending its operations in Malaysia too.
According to Channel News Asia, online grocery and food delivery provider Honestbee will be “temporarily suspending” its operations in Malaysia from Monday (22 July) onwards.
It stopped its food delivery service here in Singapore earlier in May, as part of a strategic review of its business.
Reform
In an email observed by CNA, the service provider revealed that the decision was made in the Singapore headquarters to “reform the honestbee business and come back to serve (customers) better in the future”.
Groceries, however, will still be fair game, as honestbee customers can still place orders by Friday to have it delivered over the weekend.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience that we might cause, but worry not, we are already working hard to be back as soon as possible,” the company said.
“Ongoing strategic review” of their business
In early May, honestbee confirmed that co-founder Joel Sng was stepping down as chief executive officer (CEO), with key investor Brian Koo scheduled to fill the position.
The move’s reportedly part of the company’s “ongoing strategic review of our business” and comes after key executives like co-founder Isaac Tay and managing director Chris Urban have left the firm. Just two days ago, Christina Lim, honestbee’s vice president of marketing, also left the firm after one year of service.
In April, it was announced that honestbee will be laying off 10% of its global headcount, almost double from the aforementioned 6%.
It’s also believed that the startup has retrenched at least 50 to 70 people out of its 1,000-strong staff across several markets.
And so… now what?
Well, considering how there’s hardly a lack of food delivery services here in Singapore and Malaysia, I doubt patrons will be too concerned with Honestbee’s ‘temporary’ absence. Groceries will still be fair game too (albeit over the weekends), so there’s not much concern in that sector either.
And so really, I can only hope that Honestbee will get its shit together and make a comeback, stronger, better.
Because in all honesty, that’s the only way you’re gonna be able to make it in a society as cut-throat as this.
And so with that in mind, I just end off this article here.
And subtly hope for loads of promo codes upon their highly-anticipated comeback. 😉
