How many of us actually religiously floss every day? Probably less than 10%. Due to our hectic lifestyles, even a quick brush at the end of the day is considered an accomplishment.
But did you know that by not flossing, we are actually allowing ourselves to fall into the unhealthy zone? Yes, and it’s not just our teeth and gums that are suffering. If you wish to maintain your well-being, you need to know these horrifying things that can happen to you if you do not floss daily.
Gum disease
The top reason which most of us already know. The accumulation of dental plaque between our teeth and near our gums can cause inflammation which will result in gingivitis. If still not taken care of, it will develop into periodontitis which is a more advanced and severe stage. If not treated properly, tooth loss will result.
I doubt any of us want to look older than we actually are right? Can you imagine having to put on dentures and having rotten gums at your age? Oh gosh no.
Halitosis
Do you want to smell like a sewer drainage system each time you open your mouth to speak? I don’t think so. Flossing allows you to clean the areas between your teeth and gums that brushing alone cannot reach. If these areas aren’t cleaned properly, the resulting tooth decay and gum disease will cause bad breath. Argh, not very pleasant isn’t it?
Heart disease
Everyone needs to understand that every single organ and function in our bodies are interlinked. So yes, it is not surprising that neglecting the health of your teeth and gums can lead to diseases in other regions of your anatomy. People suffering from heart disease must be very vigilant in their oral hygiene as the mouth is an entry point to harmful bacteria that may reach the cardiac tissue. This will then result in infective endocarditis which is the inflammation of a part of the heart caused by bacteria.
Learn to reduce the risks by thoroughly brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Just keep that mouth clean.
Diabetes
A person who suffers from diabetes has organs that usually heal slower than normal. Thus, tissue inflammation can develop more rapidly, particularly at the gum level. Keeping your oral hygiene in good shape is essential in ensuring that you do not encourage or aggravate diabetes even further.
